Gerber’s latest multi-tool, the MP600 once again utilises the company’s ground breaking ‘flick of the wrist action’ design for deployment – an ingenious mechanism that was the major selling point when they launched their first ever multi-tool in 1991.
Build and Features
Measuring 5 1/8” in the closed position and 6 5/8” when the ‘plier heads’ are ‘slid’ out, the MP600 is an all stainless steel manufacture and weighs 9oz. The Black finish is applied not only for cosmetic reasons but also as a very practical ‘non-glare’ coating suiting both military use and hunting.
The ‘one-handed’ opening plier heads also incorporate replaceable tungsten carbide wire cutters. To use all three sides - when one ‘set’ become dull or misshapen, the tungsten carbide cutters need to be rotated 120-degrees, and you’ve got yourself a good-as-new wire cutter. After three rotations, the entire cutter blade can be replaced.
This rugged and outwardly Spartan looking multi-tool features 14 tools in all, all being accessed from inside the handles and are deployed with thumb nicks or lugs. These are a 2 ½” long knife blade, 2 ½” double sided (fine and course) metal file blade, 2 ½” aggressively toothed wood saw, small, medium and large flat head screw driver heads, medium posi-drive head, clam pack opener, can and bottle opener plus a well sized lanyard ring. The company’s patented Saf. T.Plus™ locking system takes care of ensuring tools deployed from the handles stay securely in place while in use.
The ‘flick of the wrist’ opening action allows the user to deploy the pliers feature with one hand. There are a number of methods but I simply depress the locking catches and ‘jog’ my hand down swiftly and the weight of the tool is sufficient to allow the pliers to easily slide up and out into position for use.
There’s no doubt the Gerber MP600 is a very robust, easy to clean and a very well featured multi-tool. Personally I’d have liked to see the famous ‘fiskars’ scissors in the handles but for this model; they’ve decided to omit them. However, the Gerber MP600 has a lot to offer and will certainly appeal to many hunters and outdoorsmen.
The Gerber MP600 Needlenose multi-tool is priced at £99.99 complete with Berry-Compliant Ballistic Nylon Sheath and Limited Lifetime Warranty. For stockists call 01506 406277 or visit www.gerbergear.co.uk
