Leatherman Curl Multi tool

Leatherman Curl Multi tool

Although Leatherman’s products are undoubtedly very useful, and of great quality, they do tend to be amongst the most expensive multi-tools on the market. Perhaps with that in mind, they have now introduced the Curl to their range, and it is something of a ‘less is more’ tool with some great features and a very reasonable price tag.

Fifteen

For comparative purposes, you can think of the Curl as a slimmed-down version of the Leatherman Wave+, with fewer tools but no compromise on quality. With 15 tools, compared to 17 on the Wave+, the serrated blade and the wood saw have been sacrificed, allowing the Curl to be slimmer and a good ounce lighter. It also has a large pocket clip which, despite sticking out a bit, does not interfere with your grip on the tool but does make for a very convenient carry.

The blade and the file both open and lock in place using Leatherman’s normal mechanism, which is extremely secure and is unlocked only when you press the release button. At the other end of the Curl, the tools are held in place with a sliplock mechanism that does not have a release button, so they can be folded away much easier and quicker. When you open these tools, you feel and hear the slip-lock engage and it holds very securely.

Driving force

story continues below...

In use, the large driver bit-holder proved to be extremely strong and, even when put to heavy use, the slip lock mechanism did not fold once. For particularly tough jobs, you can open the handle out 90º into a ‘pistol grip’ formation, to put extra torque through the tool, and it still remains in place, which is a testament to just how strong the mechanism is. Despite being so secure when it’s deployed, the slip lock mechanism releases very easily when folding the tools back into the handles.

The pliers are very strong, so you can apply a lot of pressure through the handles comfortably. The serrations on the faces of both the regular and the needle-nosed pliers are deep and sharp, providing an excellent grip on materials and objects.

The 2.92” blade is the usual super-sharp 420HC steel. Seeing as it locks, this is not a UK legal tool to carry, even though its primary function is the pliers.

Conclusion

Without listing the tools individually, it is fair to say that they are all generally tools that you will actually use and they all work well. Some larger multi-tools do carry features that are perhaps not all that useful and the Curl has not lost anything vital to its fatter cousins, like the wave+.

The Curl is supplied with a good quality Nylon Sheath, in addition to the pocket clip, and the 25- year warranty underlines the quality of the tool you are getting. This is a great product and Leatherman have simplified the content, rather than compromising the quality, so you are still getting a top-end multitool at a great price.
