Leatherman fans will immediately recognise the iconic, box-like shape found in Tim Leatherman’s original PST design. More importantly, the Rebar’s pliers have been optimised for strength and feature replaceable wire/hard-wire cutters; the first time the company has integrated these into a multi-tool that only measures four-inches when closed. Weighing in at 6.7oz, the all stainless steel Rebar is a butterfly opener, and upon ‘turning it inside out’, you are holding a very much up-graded but quite familiar ‘head’ format of needlenose pliers, regular pliers, as well as those very useful and versatile replaceable ‘cutters’.
All other tools are accessed from the insides of the handles, via thumb nicks or lugs. The tools include a double sided file, small and medium flat head screwdrivers, full sized Phillips head screwdriver, awl (with thread loop), three-inch fine edge knife blade, threeinch fully serrated edge knife blade, can/ bottle opener, lanyard ring and a very aggressively edged three-inch wood saw.
They also come together very precisely when closed, to form quite a substantial and deep-set platform to operate any outboard tools from, while the rounded corners allow the Rebar to still feel comfortable in use. All tools ‘lock out’ very securely and safely thanks to Leatherman’s lock out mechanism, which requires a firm press of the thumb on the large heavy-duty rocker catch; this then loosens the hold and allows the tool deployed to be returned into the handle. Incidentally, as well as the model featured there’s also a Black Oxide finish option and a model denoted as the EDR Rebar (Everyday Carry) which replaces ‘blades’ with more utility tools – one being a pair of scissors. The Leatherman Rebar can be purchased with either a Nylon or Leather Sheath and carries a 25-year warranty.
