I’ve said it before and no doubt I’ll say it again but I’m really impressed by what I have here on test; Trento of Italy sell a wide range of folding and fixed blade knives but I’d not seen any of their multitools in the flesh before. Dave Mills of X-Calibre, the UK distributor, has an eye for a quality bargain and this item is a lovely little thing. It features spring-loaded, needle nosed pliers at its heart and the two handles unfold to deploy it for use. What I really like though are the hardwood scales that are screwed to the stainlesssteel grips. They just add a real touch of class to what could otherwise be a fairly utilitarian tool. Once opened, the small spring keeps the pliers under tension and makes them much easier to use compared to the un-sprung alternatives out there. The head has a flat gripping section at the front, a curved griping section in the middle and there is a wire cutter near the pivot for maximum strength.
The various tools are accessed by opening the pliers and then selecting what you want from either side. One side has a 2½-inch metal file that has a Metric and Imperial rule on the reverse and a small pry bar on the end. There is also a combined bottle opener and flat bladed screwdriver, a very efficient can opener and finally a rather aggressive looking, 3-inch wood saw that I found great for a spot of hide pruning. The other handle holds a 2¾-inch fish scaler, a slimmed-down Phillips screwdriver, a small flat bladed screwdriver and last but not least a nonlocking, part-serrated 2¼-inch blade. The build quality is good and the stainless-steel construction should provide years of service; a Cordura style belt sheath is provided and everything comes in a nice presentation box.
The above assortment of tools covers just about any task, without the grips becoming too bulky and those hardwood scales are a real bonus! Trento knives are extremely well priced and at £45, it’s a good old fashioned bargain!
