Reximex Myth

Reximex Myth

Reximex is a Turkish brand that began trading and manufacturing PCP airguns in 2015. I wasn’t aware of the company until Range-Right began importing their products into the UK a few months back, and one look at the Range- Right catalogue reveals an extensive range of rifles and pistols that come crammed with features. On test here is the Reximex Myth, and after several extended shooting sessions spent evaluating this ‘new kid on the block’, it’s obvious that we will be seeing a lot more from this manufacturer as it gains fans along the way.

Modern approach

Billed as a ‘brand you can trust’, the company make much of their use of the ‘latest R&D technologies’, and first impressions are definitely positive. The Myth (known as the ‘Tormenta’ in other markets) is very well presented, coming as it does, with a dedicated hard case, two cassette-style magazines, a single shot tray, filling adaptor, Allen keys and instruction booklet. It’s great to have the case, but a realistic assessment has to conclude that it is a little snug. Fit a large scope and/or a silencer and the Myth may not fit back inside. Of course, treat it as a breakdown, add-on accessory to be fitted each time and the problem is solved.

But hey, let’s not dwell on negatives, when this model has so much to praise. In fact, I’ll nail my colours early, for I’ve instantly become a fan. I’m sure it’s in the eye of the beholder etc, but I love the styling. Super stylish and practical sums it up nicely. So, let’s get up close and personal and see just what we get for our bucks.

Dual feed

The more eagle-eyed will have noticed that the Myth sports dual air tanks, in that it runs a conventional air cylinder below the barrel up front, whilst the butt section is built around a rear-mounted buddy bottle. Both air supplies feed centrally and are filled from the one valve, at the front of the cylinder. The result, unsurprisingly, with a combined 380cc air capacity, is a sizeable shot count.

As a hunting model, the matte black finish applied to the cylinder and receiver is highly practical. The barrel itself appears to be chemically blued, but this is still semi-matte, so in keeping with the practical remit. The stock is composite and effectively two part. Whilst stylish lines look the part, the tapered, angular forend, and that contoured pistol grip, also score highly in terms of ergonomics. My large hand just fell naturally into place over the raked grip, and in the shoulder, the Myth just works for me! The cheek is comfortable enough over the bottle, and with that pushbutton adjustable rubber butt pad all part of the assembly, obtaining a good sight picture and correct head alignment, is fairly easy. Just snap the button and there’s 1.5” of movement up or down.

Dual rails

In keeping with some rivals, Reximex feature a clever dual mounting rail system - either use the inner dovetail or mount to the wider Picatinny outer. All very clever, but I have to say on test using the Picatinny rail, the back mount (known Sportsmatch quality for the record) failed to fully tighten on the base. Switching to the dovetails, all worked fine.

Charging the action is straight forward. Just pull the metal dust cap clear, insert the filling probe adaptor and charge the system. 250bar is the max, but 200bar is recommended, and that’s what I stayed at. Bleed the line, remove the probe and replace the dust cap to protect the open valve. PCP’s hate dirt, so it pays to respect the system.

Remember there’s a single-shot tray which is a simple slide-in fit into the mag well. I stayed with the magazines, two of which come with the gun. Another negative here, as one of the mags didn’t actually fit, but ignoring that minus point, filling the other mag proved easy and it was very efficient in operation. Here, we twist the clear mag cover clockwise until it stops, then drop the first pellet headfirst into the aperture, which holds the drum. Then, fill each position in turn, pull back the side-lever, and the mag can then be pushed into its slot from the right side of the receiver. Cycling the action proved super slick and faultless, which I have to say, coupled with the overall feel of the action, makes using the Myth a very pleasurable experience. Balance and handling are impressive, and with that air supply front and back configuration, there’s plenty of firepower, yet the Myth stays compact.

Firing the Myth in standard form proved pretty loud, given that relatively short barrel. However, simply unscrew the swish barrel finisher and a silencer can be spun into place via the 1/2” UNF thread. The muzzle report thereafter is dramatically muted.

Crisp & precise

On test, the trigger proved very user friendly and whilst I appreciate this is an area where personal choice plays a big part, I really liked the trigger as set - ultra-short first stage and a crisp, predictable release. Just as well, because despite the instructions saying remove the grip to adjust, it looked to me like the stock needed to come off first.

Major attention to detail comes with that well-shaped trigger shoe. Just gently and carefully slacken the small Allen screw, and the blade can then be adjusted to suit. Basically, it twists around the pillar, up, down or angled off sideways. Competition shooters will love it, but the benefits of fit and feel won’t be lost on hunters that appreciate such features. Let’s face it, maximizing accuracy and performance is vital against live quarry, and the Myth allows for that thoroughness of approach.

Now before I run through just what the Myth can do performancewise, it’s time to highlight the on-board power adjuster, which is that small red lever on the front right side of the receiver. It’s a great feature and means that on the lowest setting, pushed all the way down, you’ll get loads more shots per charge. My test gun came in .22 calibre and a rough guide power-wise is as follows: lowest setting 5.7 ft/lbs, ¾ dialled down 9 ft/lbs and full power 10.6 ft/lbs.

Test figures

So, with the Myth set to full power and using BSA Goldstar pellets, a chrono test was run, to gauge consistency, as well as usable shots on offer. From a 200bar fill pressure and shooting down to a residual pressure of 145bar, I clocked 102 shots with a total spread of 29 FPS. Reximex claims the shot counts are 150 in .177 and 210 in .22, and for more informal shooting I reckon you’d get near that. With one eye on potential performance though, I’m more interested in consistency, and here, it should be noted that if you took the first 80 shots from the charge, then the total velocity spread was just 20 FPS. So plenty of potential here, for various applications, dependent upon the individual.

So what of accuracy? Well, I have to say, pretty damn good. Air Arms Diabolo Fields came to the fore here, and ragged clusters initially over 25 yards got my attention. Moving back to just under 40 yards, and groups were much the same size on test, with sub 3/8” c-t-c the norm.

Conclusion

Overall assessment time, and let’s start by saying that the Myth obviously had its flaws. Namely the suspect Picatinny rail on my test model, and the one dodgy mag that wouldn’t fit. So, quality control isn’t quite what it should be. That said, firstly, Reximex isn’t alone in this area, and dealers will always swap out or put right any faults. Secondly, did it spoil the fun and stop the action? - definitely not. Excellent down range results couldn’t fail to impress, and coupled with great handling, design and function, not to mention those good looks, the Myth gets a big thumbs up from me.

Thanks to Range & Country Shooting Supplies in Sleaford, Lincs for the kind loan of this rifle.
