Britain’s Jews in the First World War
- Last updated: 24/05/2019
Archival military records are better filed today in a way which allows authors to access material and crossreference sources for factual accuracy. This improvement has allowed the author to painstakingly research into the contribution made by the Jewish community in Britain during WWI, a subject which has hitherto gone largely overlooked. As an ethnic group, the Jewish community was important to the country and Jewish men did their duty by enlisting as officers and other ranks. They served in all branches of the armed forces and fought in all theatres of war. Their bravery earned them five VCs and hundreds of other awards. This fascinating work recounts personal stories and examines what these losses meant to the Jewish community. The price they paid can be seen on the headstones of so many military cemeteries which mark the WWI battlefields.
