The author has done an excellent job and covers all equipment from helmets to boots of the Army and Royal Navy. Early types of protection against gas are also covered and personal items from cigarette cases to documents are fascinating. It is also a work which can be enjoyed for the sheer pleasure of reading about equipment from the period including how it was made, where, when and it was used. To sum it up in one word; ‘masterful’.
