Forgotten

Forgotten

Landing on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944 there were many specialist units, such engineers, signallers and medics, but there were other units, which became ‘lost’ in the mass of numbers. One of these, was the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, which landed on Omaha and, despite the chaos on the bloodiest of all the landing beaches, the unit performed its duties to its fullest capacity. What makes this book on this unit so special, is that it concentrates on the black soldiers’ involvement with the operation. The author deals sensitively with the racial tension in the US Army at the time and how they were received in England. This is a fascinating book, which looks at another ethnic group and the role it played in the success of the operation. The sad thing is, it has taken so long for such a book to appear.
