The Home Guard Companion

The Home Guard Companion

story continues below...

The Home Guard is a subject about which a number of books have been written and collectors can even buy the wartime training manual at militaria fairs. This is really a collection of training instructions gathered together and edited for reference or general reading. But do not be put off by that brief summary, because it works well for collectors and enthusiasts of Home Front. The text is taken from the training manuals, which were produced between 1941 and 1945 and covers all aspects of instruction given to members of the Home Guard. This includes drill, weapon handling from pistols to machine gun, map reading, field-craft and tactics. The original illustrations are a great help, as they would have been to the real Home Guard. There is a section of wartime humour, which is light-hearted fun. The editor brings the story up to date with a summary at the end of the work and in doing so also pays tribute to the men who served in the ranks of the Home Guard.
