Wellington’s Hidden Heroes

Wellington’s Hidden Heroes

story continues below...

This interesting, if somewhat slim volume, goes some way to explaining the otherwise often overlooked part played by the Belgian and Dutch armies in the Battle of Waterloo. The martial capabilities of the Dutch Prince Willem of Orange has long been seen as those of a commander without the understandings of warfare. In truth he was an experienced commander in the field who had been in battle a number of times during the fighting in Spain.

Also, if he was that incompetent then Wellington would not have used him at Waterloo because the Duke did not tolerate fools nor have any use for them on the battlefield. Willem made mistakes the same as any commander but there was more to the man as this book points out. The author has accessed a wealth of archive material and while the book is good, better use of the material would have produced a more comprehensive work, at least twice the size, with in-depth investigation.
