Leicas new 8 x 42 Trinovid Binoculars

Leicas new 8 x 42 Trinovid Binoculars

If there’s one thing you can depend on, it’s that if your binoculars have the famous Leica red dot on them, they’ll be some of the finest optics in the world. Equally, when it comes to optics, it my considered opinion that you’ll never equal Leica, their clarity, field of view, light gathering abilities, ergonomics and quality of construction are the benchmark of optical excellence. And so it is with Leica’s new Trinovid, available in both 10x42 and the slightly more multi-purpose 8x42 magnification with a 5.3mm exit pupil.

Build Quality

Constructed from magnesium and coated with a grippy, black rubber armoured surface, two deep thumb grooves help locate the binoculars within the user’s hands. Click-stop eye cups can be extended to the user’s personal preference whilst each individual dioptre is set by pulling the focusing wheel apart, adjusting accordingly then pushing back and locking the two halves together all the while retaining the 15.5mm eye relief. Using the now familiar roof prism design with what Leica refer to as P40 Phase Correction, the binoculars are nitrogen purged whilst the optics are fully HDC multi-coated and are water resistant down to a depth of 5 meters.

Clarity and detail is as you’d expect from Leica is exceptional, the Trinovid focusing down to just 11.5ft with no perceptible fall off around the edges, the 378ft field of view at 1,000 yards and 18.3 twilight factor meaning you’ll still be happily using them beyond dusk. Focusing easily and precisely, as a no nonsense hunting optic the 8x42 Trinovid are as good as they get whilst as general all-round binoculars they tick all the boxes.

At a Price…

There’s a general consensus of thought that you aren’t getting serious until you’ve spent over a thousand pounds when it comes to binoculars. But even whilst some Leicas and many other manufacturers have now reached almost infeasible prices, once you’ve handled and used Leica’s new 8x42 Trinovid, the £1,280 asking price actually starts to make sense. From the moment you first hold them and bring them to your eyes you can feel the quality, whilst a moment or two looking through them tells you and your eyes just why Leica have justifiably achieved their class leading status, a reputation they’ve enjoyed for well over a hundred years.
