Weaver Scope Mounting Kit

Weaver Scope Mounting Kit

I have to admit that I tend to approach shooting in a rather technical manner, given the precise nature of making the shot, removing as many variables as possible just make sense. To this end I have a big, cantilever tool box that I take to the range that holds just about everything I have come to realize over the years I need. There’s a full cleaning kit, hammers, punches, Allan and Torx drivers etc.

SEAL OF APPROVAL

So getting my instant seal of approval is the Weaver Scope Mounting Kit as it’s right up my street. The kit is the basic version as there’s also a larger (Deluxe) option that includes a lapping bar and check pointers for lapping in rings. What you get is a plastic case that contains five slot head drivers (2 x 0.25x180, 1 x 0.35 x 180, 1 x .035” X 300 and 1 x ,065 x 430) along with three Torx drives 2 x 15 and 1 x 20 and two Allan drives 3/32” and 5/32”. These 1?4” hex drives plug into an adjustable torque wrench 10 to 80 inch/lbs.

Along with this are two spirit levels with magnetic clamps, a tube of Weaver SureThread (thread lock) and a set of self-adhesive pads, pads plus full instructions and a CD.

SIMPLE

Operation is simple and Weaver has also accounted for the familiar problem of thinking you have the reticule upright only to discover you have not, which is a pain. There are enough driver bits to account for just about all scope ring screws, though being American I was surprised that they did not include #10 Torx to suit Ruger rifles too.

The two spirit levels can be fitted with sliding magnetic clamps to allow you to attach one to the rifle to get it level and the other to the scope for the same purpose. Given most scopes are aluminium as are some rifle actions you might think it a waste of time. But Weaver have this covered too, as they include a set of self-adhesive pads that will do the same job.

TORQUE, TORQUE

The adjustable torque wrench is a great idea. Graduated in 5 inch/lb increments all you do is pull out the base and dial in the setting you need then wind in the screw until it clicks. This is equally good for bases as it is for rings as well as action screws. Once again setting the same fixing pressures will make for a more consistent mount and therefore reduce the variables. Being a standard 1?4” drive it’s also possible to use sockets for bolt-on mounts.
Helpfully Weaver includes a torque setting chart that indicates what pressure to set for either alloy or steel components and on different parts of the set up such as bases and rings. For example – they say that if you have steel scope rings then a max of 20 inch/lbs is enough, with alloy this drops to 15 inch/lbs. Cross bolt screws can be set to 30 or 20 inch/lbs accordingly.

Overall a well thought out and practical item for the more technical shooters amongst us.
