Shooting is an addictive sport, and the satisfaction of getting the best from the equipment is second to none. Accepting that airguns are precision tools however, necessitates that all that gleaming kit is maintained in tip top condition. My selection of products here, from the Sportsmarketing (SMK) stable, are all intended to make our lives that little bit easier in that regard.

Cover Up

Gun covers are a pre-requisite to protect any rifle from unwanted scratches etc, and SMK market several at a price that will hardly break the bank. The Padded Olive Rifle Slip is a budget case that will do the job, but for peace of mind, the thick ‘egg-shell’ interior padding of the Special Deluxe case makes sense for most shooters who value their kit. Features like a full length zip, pop-fastened padded carry handles and an integral sling strap, all make this a neat and affordable option.

Cleaning Kits

Some sort of cleaning kit is a necessity if a gun’s barrel is to be kept clean and functioning at its peak, and the two Shotgun and Rifle Cleaning Kits featured here are all available from the SMK catalogue. These two large boxed packs carry identical cleaning sets inside, with the choice of either an aluminium or wooden carry case. Each kit contains a three piece extendable brass rod for shotguns, whilst a further three piece rod is intended for pistols or rifles. A choice of ten screw-fit phosphor bronze brushes (of graduating size), and a series of cloth mop rolls are also included. Finally, there’s a choice of plastic end pieces to allow for the gentler option of a pull-through swab, (fifty 3inch swabs are included). This caps off what can only be described as a seriously comprehensive cleaning kit.

The SMK Airgun Cleaning Kit comprises a traditional looking three piece screw-fit rod set, complete with five head attachments, catering for both .177 and the larger .22 calibre, and for many, this will suffice.

Lube and Protect

Lubrication is another important area of gun maintenance, and the handy pump/bottles from SMK are available filled with Mineral Oil, or Silicone Gun Oil. The Mineral Oil is for more general use, and having light viscosity can be used where deep penetration is required. Wipe the rifle over after use, and a fine protective film will be left over the metalwork, protecting against corrosion and rust.

Silicon Oil on the other hand will still protect against corrosion but as a highly specialized lubricant, needs to be kept from metal to metal contact. Lubrication of ‘o’ rings and leather/plastic washers however, is a main intended use for this product, making it another worthy addition to the SMK product line-up.
