Gun storage is a serious business. Failure to stow any weapon away safely, can have tragic repercussions, unfortunately, as perfectly demonstrated only too recently by some appalling incidents in the news.

Different situations and types of weapon all dictate the level of security required, but as always, a modicum of common sense is a pre-requisite.

Firearms are governed by a legal framework which requires sturdy, heavy gauge steel cabinets, bolted to the wall and installed to a level that will satisfy the local bobby. No half measures here.

Airweapons, by contrast, if under the legal power limit, require no such measures, although common sense dictates that the adoption of a safety regime is the only way forward; especially if young children are involved.

The Fast-Rak instant gun rack, is a wonderfully simple, yet versatile product that has a part to play in homestorage, or indeed mobile functions, assuming the above access issues have been resolved as appropriate.

Rak Em Up

Made in the USA by Outdoor Connection, and marketed in the UK by Deben Group, the FastRak is a moulded, contoured rifle rack block formed from a similar compound to the eggshell style padding used to line gun cases. The formed peg sections are split to allow an accessory to be pushed alongside and into any of a series of holes. Fishing rods are shown on the packaging, but cleaning rods, shooting sticks, walking poles are just some of the options applicable. With provision for four to five rifles to be stored, the 10 inch FastRak makes for a handy, compact design. The block itself needs to be mounted onto a hard surface, and here`s the clever bit: supplied with both a sticky backed strip for permanent fixing or a magnetic pliable metal strip, for temporary adhesion, the options and uses suddenly open up.

I tend to store a couple of airguns standing up in a cupboard, and the FastRak organises the setup rather nicely. If the magnetic strip is to be used then the backing on the sticky strip needs to be removed and the flexible magnetic strip is then simply pressed into place, grooved side down, and left for 8-10 hours to set. The assembly is then ready for action. One clever use is to snap the Rak in to place on the side of a car. This would make a handy club rack, if out in the field at a club shoot, for example, but the options are endless and it’s a lot of fun for less than £15!
