It has always amazed me just how few properly waterproof gun cases there are on the market. Where soft cases are concerned, build and material quality varies enormously. Go hunting or to the range and get caught in a downpour, and your hardware is at risk, so what can you do? Easy, get something that offers 100% protection and a quality build.
Ogden’s Shooting Supplies are a bespoke English manufacturer that produce high class specialist accessories and their expanding range of gun cases are fast gaining a reputation for quality, without compromise. One such is their ‘Quickslip’, and its low-key name belies the level of detail and research that has gone into its construction. As Phil Ogden explained: “the case was developed over a 12 month period with help and input from stalkers at the BASC. Several samples were made, and the design tweaked, as constructive criticism and suggestions were taken onboard. We have tried most rifles with scope/bi-pod/ moderators attached and come up with two universal sizes that best suit modern day stalking”.
The Quickslip is equally at home across all disciplines. My sample was the 50”, but a 54” is also available for the longest rifle/moderator combos, either exudes a quality feel from the off; and the technical specifications reveal why. The main shell is drab olive ballistic nylon, used primarily in military gear. Webbing handles are box stitched and bar tacked, offering highly robust construction, complete with a rubber, wrap-around, stud fastened grip. It can be carried on your back via a shoulder harness system with padded shoulder straps and a sternum strap with QD buckle. There are additional mounting points, so that the straps can be moved around and positioned for comfort to suit or removed. Leather trims on each end give added strength where required.
Inside, is a snug black ‘velcrotex velore’ lining with 25mm foam padding, the bottom 12” gets a protective layer of Cordura to reduce wear. Details such as this are the result of feedback from shooters, so will suit any protection application. I sat a sizeable Impact GSX600 air rifle, complete with scope fitted, into the Quickslip, and it sank away with room to spare; and the fact that you can sit the butt of the rifle into an inner pouch also helps keep everything more secure.
So how waterproof is it? Phil said: “We have gone to great lengths to make our Quickslips as watertight as possible by incorporating a water-resistant drop liner behind the foam to form a waterproof barrier“. What makes these cases stand out though, is the quality of all the components used, and that includes top quality waterproof zips. All importantly, the design keeps them quiet in use, whilst a small loop allows them to be secured together with a padlock if required.
A large outer pocket sits on the front, and this has a main outer zip, a front zip-up pouch, and even a discreet zip- up inner pocket, for security documents etc. All in all, a top class rifle case, made from high grade materials, in England. Not cheap, but if you want the best, these classy products from Ogdens have to be a sound investment for any serious enthusiast.
