First Tactical Specialist Rolling Duffle

A suitcase or large duffle without wheels is no longer a viable concept to my mind. Lots of bags have wheels that are acceptable for smooth car parks and airport terminals but these soon fall by the wayside, often literally, once terrain gains any ruggedness. The duffle has 90-litre capacity and when fully loaded with clothes for a two-week break, came in on the scales at 35kg, which was set to be a solid test for ride and handling comfort in transit. The 1000/1680D Nylon construction encloses a sprung lightweight internal external document display, with a fourth pocket lining the inner compartment, for small thin valuables.

Wheels keep on turning

A telescopic aluminium handle with a rubberised grip withdraws from the case to roll it along and the larger than normal, 90mm diameter wheels, made progress across rough surfaces far smoother. I find it worth mentioning that they have large, visually durable bearings within them too, hopefully giving miles of service. Each wheel sits within sturdy corner reinforcement with skid plates underneath and if they do get muddy, the ‘wheel arch’ looks like it will do a reasonable job of skimming off any mud and gravel that may block rotation of the minimally treaded wheel design. Heavy-duty moulded foot studs assist the case to balance vertically, so when queuing for example, the case is easy to just nudge along with these and the wheels, allowing incremental progress, without having to heft any of the weight of the case; the wheels retain the weight and the studs merely aid balance. Subtle, but effective. Overall size is 30x16x16-inches (76x40x40cm) and 4.4kg mass, so not as light as some bags/cases but far more durable and capable on rough ground. All surface rainwater flowed off the bag easily and after a static 30-minute test in pools on the fabric surface, all internal items were still bone dry; just be cautious to fully close the zips, as they will not stand full immersion.

Conclusion

You really need to drag heavy rolling duffles on a few trips to separate the wheat from the chaff but through good luck or refined judgement, First Tactical have made a very refined travel case with subtle benefits.
