Nockover Targets

Nockover Targets

Fall flat cord resettable metal targets are now the norm for both FT & HFT competition shooting and of course make superb practice aids for the general airgun shooter. As many know, in competition the standard kill-zone is a 40mm hole in the target, in some events, hitting the target is made more demanding as this ‘kill-area’ aperture is reduced in size to 25mm.

As a result of airgun shooters both competition and hunter requiring fall-flats for more precise practice – the company now produce targets with 15mm kill areas and some with a reducer mechanism that can alter the regular 40mm kill-area to 25mm and then to the very demanding 15mm kill-zone.

All targets in the comprehensive range the company manufacture (including both featured here) are manufactured from 3mm zinc coated steel that’s been laser cut into shape. The body profiles of these targets are bolted to 4 ¾” X 5 ¾” coated steel bases. For securing to the ground they have a hole at each corner and come supplied with 4X heavy-duty metal ground spikes and 50m of orange colour re-set cord on a handle/winder.

How It Works

story continues below...

The ‘over-centre’ mechanism that allows the target plate to fall is quite ingenious and over the years the company has developed it to make it very reliable – indeed Nockover the targets of choice for many FT and HFT clubs and competitions. Behind the ‘kill-area’ (hole), in the front profile plate is a red coloured steel disc. This is at the top of a length of steel attached to the sturdy base and attached to the front rear of the target by an articulated linkage. When a pellet flies through the circular kill-area it hits the steel disc behind. The power of the pellet impact sends it backwards which in turn pulls the front profile of the target backwards to fall-flat – obviously signifying a ‘hit’ and hence the name of these types of target. To reset the target to its upright position, you simply pull the cord that is attached to the front of the profile plate via a heavy-duty steel swivel.

Reduced!

At present the company manufacture a rat and squirrel profile fall-flat target with the 15mm kill area, but they also have a few target versions that can have the main 40mm kill-area reduced.

A very popular model is the ‘Multi-Hole’ Rook - as the name suggests it can be set to have different sizes of ‘hole’ for you to put the pellet through to hit the kill area and therefore triggering the fall flat mechanism. Although the rook profile main plate has a standard 40mm kill-zone hole, to reduce the aperture a moveable metal plate with a 25mm and 15mm hole drilled through is attached to the back of the profile plate. Secured by a lock nut and washer it has been set up so it can be moved across so the holes in the reducer are directly in line and behind the main 40mm kill-area, so either ‘aperture’ can be used to reduce the main one accordingly.

There’s a very comprehensive and diverse range of cleverly designed and ingenious targets available, even ‘custom’ specials can be made to order. The 5mm ‘kill-zone’ Rat and Multi-hole Rook Fall-Flat Targets are priced at £24.60 and £27 respectively.
