Flip Up Lens Cover

With Deben’s extensive range of own brand Hawke Sports Optics it’s hardly surprising that they have a host of optional accessories to accompany them. Not only mounts but a selection of lens covers and front shades to suit most if not all situations.

Flip-Ups

First up are the flip-up lens covers. Why more people don’t use these is a mystery as it saves a lot of effort trying to keep the glass rain and dirt free. These see through covers are available in amber or clear and slide onto the lens housing using a semi-flexible rubber collar. These synthetic covers flip out of the way offering a clear view when needed and can be closed just as fast. Deben’s comprehensive catalogue, has a sizing chart to suit. They may not be ground-breaking but they are perhaps one of the most useful accessories for your scope.

Sun Shine Shield

Next up are the standard sunshades, these screw into the objective housing thus eliminating light or rain coming across your sight picture to either hinder precise aiming or cause exterior glint from the front lens. Some Hawke scopes still do come with sunshades but Deben are well aware on some models not everybody even thinks to use them. Now sized and using another chart in the catalogue, once again it’s a case of looking up your model and ordering the one you need. All are made from black anodised aluminium and are 76mm in length.

Kill Flash!

The latest Honey Comb Sunshade is pretty nifty too and definitely for those who want the ultimate in covert operations. The idea is two-fold, as the honey comb lens cover stops the objective reflecting and flashing in the light so you do not get spotted by your quarry. To a degree it could also reduce the muzzle flash of your own gun being seen and amplified in the sight picture.

At first I thought this a gimmick, but they really do help reduce glare if shooting in bright sunlight or even over snow and also reduce internal reflections too. They are just 9mm deep and slide over the objective with sizing as the flip-up lens caps. Definitely a bit tactical but of hunting use too!

Deben also markets the highly regarded Butler creek Flip-Open scope covers which are sized to suit virtually all optics and are pretty much the industry standard when it comes to quality and use. The rear one is also a great place to store your bullet drop figures for a quick reference too.

FOR - Some practical scope accessories
AGAINST - Not a lot, though sunshades will cut down on the FOV and are not good in low light
VERDICT - Good kit, don’t leave home without at least the scope caps
