It’s often said the shotgun is the forgotten firearm when it comes to cleaning. Maybe it’s because of the lack of rifling, and although the majority of shooters always ‘wipe down’ the outer with a suitably impregnated cloth, smoothbores are still often less likely to have the barrels cleaned, which isn’t ideal for optimum performance. It’s not only corrosion that we’re endeavouring to keep at bay, but a dirty tube will ultimately affect your gun’s accuracy, specifically rifles and pistols.

No solvents or oils supplied

None of Jack Pyke’s cleaning kits includes the essential solvents and oils you’ll require, but this isn’t that uncommon with other brands. This is because many shooters have a favoured brand they already use. There are many suitable cleaning solvents, so stick with a brand you can trust. All the gun care kits featured are suitable to use with whatever you choose to use.

Pull thru

For quick and easy cleans in the field, The Snaky is used as you would any pull-through. It cleans a shotgun bore in a matter of seconds. The built-in bore brushes, plus the absorbent strong cord, clean and swab the bore in one quick pass. The Snaky is available for 12 and 20-gauge shotguns.

More involved

The Shotgun Cleaning Kit is a heavy-duty brass set available in three sizes: 12 gauge, 20-gauge, and .410. The basic but very handy kit is supplied in an ABS clip-fastened carry case, with the rods broken down into three segments, while the brushes and the mop are stored near them. Overall, ideal for cleaning your gun at home or in the field.

Multi-purpose

The Multi Gun Cleaning Kit is for those with a wider selection of firearms, as it covers the most popular rifle and pistol calibres.  It consists of a universal handle, plus an adaptor for the .17cal rods, two brass accessory adaptors, two slotted tips, shotgun rods, .17 - .45cal pistol/rifle rods, brushes in 10/12B, .20/28B, .410, .45, .40, .357/38, .177, .30, .270/280, and .22cal. Mops are also supplied to suit all the aforementioned calibres. There’s also a generous amount of cleaning patches for use with the slotted tips, and all the rods break down into manageable sections for storage in the strong, clip-fastened, wooden foam-lined storage box.

Conclusions

Other kits include the 3-Piece Brush Set, a thoughtfully designed trio of cleaning brushes and instruments suited to more niggly outer cleaning on rifles and shotguns. Especially useful for getting into ribs and vents where dirt can lodge and/or hide. There’s also a lightweight 12-gauge cleaning kit, plus a couple of very useful cleaning mats.
