Deben Olight T20 Torch

Deben Olight T20 Torch

See The Light

Mark Camoccio sees the light with the Olight T20 Tactical Torch

Tactical’ has become the height of cool these days, but where torches are concerned, think military grade ‘engineered’ products. The likes of Mag Light popularised higher-end flashlights a while back, and with an increasing number of people who are now prepared to pay for higher quality products, more manufacturers are seeing the light, so to speak.

Olight are a company whose wares are now available through Deben’s distribution network in the UK. Whether security operatives or just outdoor sportsman, the demands can often be the same - and Olight seem good at arriving at the solutions.

T is for Tactical

On test here is one of Olight’s smallest designs, and a very neat little product it is too. Designed as a truly pocket sized torch, the diminutive T20 comes is 4.75inches long and less than an inch wide (123mm x 24mm) and weighs just 58g - yet performance on full power, really does belie its dimensions.

This style of torch is all about feel, and in the hand, the T20 does shout quality. There’s the right amount of weight, without being heavy, and the feel derived from the hard-anodized aluminium alloy body is spot-on. Plenty of detail comes from the multiple surfaced end pieces, knurled collar, and that finely knurled centre section. Add in a large clip for either belt or pocket mounting, and the overall impression is of a well thought out, stylish product.

Power Up

Energy comes from two small CR123A type batteries powering the Cree XP-G R5 LED. Batteries are replaced by simply unscrewing the torch’s barrel. The on/off switch is the large rubberized pad at the rear. Once switched on, the modes can be cycled through via a gentle twist of the front collar; offering three power levels, and a strobe feature. Low power is ideal for checking rooms at close quarters for example, whilst full power is impressive - given the size of the T20. The manufacturers claim 125 metres range (beam intensity: 3900cd), and my evaluation could certainly vouch for this. On full power incidentally, the beam illuminates an area roughly 10metres across, throwing light on the immediate vicinity, as well as reaching into the distance. The three power levels are Low (8 lumens x 84hrs), Medium (150lumens x 5hrs) and High (260 lumens x 2hrs).

For the record, this light is also extremely water resistant, whilst also apparently able to withstand dropping onto a hard surface from up to 1.5metres - a part of the test wasn’t prepared to put into practise, to be honest!

Supplied in a neatly compartmentalized package, the set includes the T20 itself, strong canvas style carry case, lanyard, and spare sealing ‘o’ rings.

Overall then , if you’re in the market for a super compact, highly portable, truly pocket-sized torch, then the high grade T20 has to be high on any list of candidates. Small and perfectly formed, yet with an eye-popping performance - it just has to come highly recommended.
