Deben Vehicle Mounted Lamp

Deben Vehicle Mounted Lamp

Solo lamping from a vehicle can be a pain, what with the rifle in one hand/shoulder and you trying to control the lamp with the other. However, Deben’s new Tracer 12V Remote Sport Light has the solution!

CLAMP OR SCREW?

Depending on your vehicle and needs the kit consists of two items, three if you don’t want to be drilling holes in the roof of your 4x4! On test is the 210mm Remote Sport Light, which is available in 180 and 150mm heads too; power output is 100, 75 and 50 watts accordingly. You also need a T-handle, either fixed (FP) or variable power (VP) options.

As I said it can be roof-mounted as the pre-drilled base comes with a set of four bolts and lock nuts along with an internal plate and foam washer. All you do is drill the holes, would you really want to be doing that to your 4x4? Better is a roof bar, which attaches by twin, heavy duty suction cups, with a hinged adaptor plate the lamp bolts to that and clamps to the end of the bar.

The lamp head is angle-adjustable via a locking lever and moves in an 80° vertical arc. Control is by the T-handle that gives 360° rotation and approximately 25° of tilt in all directions. The beam can be adjusted from spot to flood by rotating the head. There’s also a clutch that tightens or loosens the rotating joint, so when set the lamp will stay where it is. It’s now simply a matter of grabbing the T-handle and panning the light where you want it. Much easier than a hand-held unit up out of the window, the advantages offered for the solo shooter are immense.

ADJUSTABLE

The variable power handle is also an asset certainly with the 210mm lamp pumping out 100 watts. One end of the T has a push-button ON/ OFF switch and the other a rotary rheostat. For me as a right hander I found it best to set it up with the ON/OFF on the right, which can be operated with the left hand thumb and the rheostat on the left, which I can adjust with my little finger. This leaves me free to shoot off the mirror. Plus the lamp will stay where it’s pointed when I let go of it!

Deben quotes maximum ranges of 800, 650 and 450m for the 210, 180 and 150mm lamps. The 210mm easily did 600 yards and could pick up eyes a bit further out. Power is from the vehicle battery and a 3m lead plugs into the cigarette jack.

Overall this is an impressive, vehicle lamping set-up, Filters are available in red, amber, blue, green and Infrared (IR).
