Fenix PD35 (2014 Edition), E20 and E35UE torches

Many readers will be aware I’ve tested a lot of topquality headtorches from the Fenix Light Company.

However, this time around I’ve been given the opportunity to pick ‘n’ mix through their extensive range of handheld flashers.

If you thought torches to be a much of a muchness, Fenix certainly go against that preconceived idea, as all featured use various specific technologies for function and operation. However the trio featured do share certain commonalities of build: all are manufactured from durable aircraft-grade aluminium treated to a Premium Type III hard black anodised antiabrasive finish with an anti-roll slip resistant body design plus integral lanyard hole. They’re waterproof rated to IPX-8 standard, digitally regulated for maintaining a constant brightness and have a toughened ultra-clear glass lens with anti-reflective coating.

First up is the The Fenix PD35 (2014 Edition). As the name clearly implies, this is the up-graded version of the very similarly named model that’s previously been featured in the magazine.

However, this 25.4mm diameter torch measures 139mm long, weighs 87 grams (excluding batteries) and is now capable of delivering a stunning 960-lumen beam from its Cree XM-L2 (U2) LED.

Running on either 2x CR123A lithium batteries or 1x 18650 Li-ion rechargeable, it offers five brightness levels of 14, 50, 180, 460 and 960 lumens plus an SOS emergency strobe mode.

There’s also a low voltage warning function that indicates when the battery needs re-charging or replacing.

It also features the latest switching technology from Fenix, which consists of a side-mounted brightness/ mode switch and intelligent circuit which remembers the previously used brightness level next time you switch on. The ‘tactical’ tail cap switch allows for momentary and constanton switching functions. To add to its versatility the torch comes with a removable pocket/belt clip and Nylon carry pouch.

The PD35 (2014) is a very powerful yet compact torch that’ll fulfil almost any task required of such a utility light.

Shaky ground Alternatively, the Fenix E20 ‘Shake-Torch’ measures 160mm long is 26mm in diameter and weighs 94 grams (excluding batteries.) Powered by 2x AA batteries, quite slim and lengthy torch uses a CREE XP-E2 LED to deliver a 250-lumen beam capable of reaching out to 208m.

As the name implies it uses ‘motion control technology’ to select the desired light output. To change between lighting settings you simply point the E20 downwards and shake to select between three brightness levels of 250 lumens (1 hour 24 minutes), 125 lumens (4 hours 45 minutes) and 10 lumens (60 hours). Your chosen output can then be locked (if required) by tightening the torch head. It also features a tactical tail switch with a momentaryon- function or constant-on.

The Fenix E20 is a good choice should you require a unique but versatile, high-value everyday use/outdoor torch.

Ultimate Illuminator

Last but definitely not least is the Fenix E35UE (Ultimate Edition.) Measuring 24mm in diameter and 130mm long it weighs 72 grams (excluding batteries). Featuring a Cree XM-L2 U2 LED, it’s capable of delivering a 900 lumen beam out to 186 metres in ‘burst’ mode and offers three constant lighting levels of 10 lumens (140 hours), 120 lumens (11 hours) and 360 lumens (3 hours).

The all-function side button switches the torch on and allows you to quickly access the different brightness settings.

Having no tail switch means this torch can even be stood upright on a level surface to act as a ‘candle’ light if required.

While this model offers incredible performance at its price point, all here have their own unique characteristics and boast superior design features.
