Ballistol Universal Oil

Gun maintenance is one of those necessary evils that some, myself included, neglect, but do so at your peril, as corrosion and fouling buildup can wreck a rifle very quickly.
Ballistol UK distributes a range of dedicated cleaning and preservative products, including their highly versatile Universal Oil, which I use frequently. This product is available in various formats, including a 350ml Vairo Flex Spray with a flexible hose dispenser for £15.25, a 200ml spray can for £8.95, a 50ml bottle for £4.25, or a pack of ten wipes for £5.95.
This type of universal oil is equally effective for maintaining and preserving metal, wood, leather, rubber, and synthetic materials, as well as for a wide range of household tasks.
Specification and uses
It is an alkaline-based product that poses no health risk if ingested, is skin-safe, and is biodegradable. It also effectively neutralises combustion residues in firearms.
Its main attribute is its ability to creep into all crevices due to its low surface tension, allowing it to penetrate more effectively for better cleaning. On metal, it provides a protective alkaline film on the surface, neutralizes hand sweat and other acidic corrosive residues, and ensures that the surface is protected from corrosion.
It is safe to use on gun stocks and is actually recommended in climates with frequent rain and/or high relative humidity, where a wood stock might absorb water. Ballistol seals and protects wooden stocks, enhances the grain and shine/depth of old wood, and prevents it from drying out in hot, arid climates. Importantly, it is also safe to use on composite/polycarbonate stocks.
On leather slings, it protects the leather from becoming hard and dry, while also shielding it against water, insects, and fungi. Additionally, it maintains and protects oil-resistant synthetic materials, such as plastic, helping them retain their elasticity and prevent them from drying out.
Ballistol effectively cleans and removes all types of bore fouling, dissolving traces of copper, zinc, lead, powder residue, and tombac gilding metal. It dissolves the carbon deposits in the barrel and chamber that are left by smokeless powders.
Due to the antioxidants contained in it, Ballistol will never harden or gum up, retaining its lubricity over extended periods of exposure. Most corrosion-inhibiting lubricants can only protect against normal oxidation, but due to its alkalinity, Ballistol can also protect against galvanic corrosion, acidic corrosion, and saltwater corrosion. In fact, sweat from the hands can be one of the main causes of external rust on a gun, as it is composed of amino acids and is thus slightly acidic. Ballistol eliminates this risk.
Furthermore, it is great for all external surfaces on a gun, as it can emulsify with water. So, Ballistol mixes with the water, penetrates it, and as the water evaporates, the oil remains behind, continuing to protect the metal, plastic, or wood surfaces.
Conclusion
I always keep some of the universal oil wipes in the truck so I can wipe my rifle down after a downpour or after hot, sweaty roe-buck stalking in the summer. The spray can is an effective barrel cleaner, with Ballistol’s GunCer and Robla Solo Mil products being even more potent. I will test these in greater depth next time, but check out the website, as there is a Ballistol product that will work for you.
