Minister denies home storage ban plans

Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson MP has addressed recent speculation about home storage restrictions. Speaking to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on 16 June, she confirmed that the Government has no plans to ban certificate holders from storing firearms and shotguns at home.
The Minister stated she was unaware of where such proposals had originated, yet many in the shooting community remain sceptical given Labour’s historical position on firearms legislation.
Dame Diana confirmed that licensing fees will continue to increase with inflation on a regular basis. This follows the significant 133% fee increase implemented in February 2025.
More concerning for the shooting community is that the Minister confirmed that consultation will follow on raising shotgun licensing standards to align with firearms licensing requirements. This proposal could introduce additional administrative burdens and costs for thousands of current shotgun certificate holders.
While the Minister’s assurances on home storage provide some relief, the proposed shotgun licensing changes represent a significant concern. The upcoming consultations will prove crucial for the shooting community’s future.
Certificate holders are urged to engage actively with these consultations when published, as they will determine the framework for firearms ownership going forward.
