Scottish Gunmaker Seeks £600k Investment for Steel Shot Barrel Breakthrough

A Scottish gunmaker is seeking a £600,000 investment after developing technology for safely firing steel shot through tightly choked shotgun barrels.
Glasgow-based Glas Gunmakers, founded by Fraser Young and Jamie Culpan, says it aims “to create a shotgun that offers superior handling while withstanding the high pressures of steel shot at full choke – an achievement that is unmatched by any other gunmaker”.
The timing could be significant in light of the recently announced transition away from lead shot by 2029, forcing shooters to switch to steel sooner than anticipated. Industry guidance advises against firing steel shot through chokes tighter than ½ due to potential barrel damage.
Glas says its barrels are machined from nuclear-grade stainless steel, unlike traditional barrels made from multiple separate components. This construction, the firm states, allows the barrels to handle significantly higher pressures without the structural weaknesses associated with conventional soldered joints. Prototypes have already been tested, and the technology has been patented.
The transition to non-toxic ammunition presents both challenges and opportunities for gunmakers. While steel shot is readily available, its hardness compared to lead creates problems for existing firearms designed for softer ammunition.
Glas is seeking investment to fund machinery and facilities. Sales of 20 units are being targeted for a £1.5 million turnover by year three, and £350,000 worth of sales have already been secured.
