Suffolk and Norfolk Police Add Staff to Tackle Licensing Delays

Suffolk and Norfolk police forces have pledged additional resources to address firearms licensing backlogs following talks with organisations representing shooting interests.

Who attended the meeting?

The meeting, hosted by BASC’s eastern regional team, brought together Suffolk police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore, assistant chief constable Jules Dean from Norfolk police and superintendent Mike Brown from Suffolk Constabulary, alongside representatives from the NFU, CLA and Countryside Alliance.

What actions are being taken?

Supt Brown confirmed approval for new full-time staff to support licensing departments, with recruitment underway.

Discussions covered the creation of an Independent Advisory Group, communication improvements between licensing departments and certificate holders, and reducing delays caused by incomplete applications and missing documentation. Medical considerations were also examined.

What was the response?

Paul Quinton, BASC East director, welcomed the meeting’s outcome: “This was a constructive and very positive meeting, and we welcome the openness shown by the PCC and Suffolk Constabulary in addressing the challenges around firearms licensing.”

He added that BASC would provide ongoing support, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration between police, stakeholders and certificate holders.

What is the expected outcome?

All parties agreed to work together to strengthen the licensing system. With new staff being recruited, turnaround times are expected to improve and backlogs to reduce over the coming year.
