Airsoft Sites: Lincs & Notts

As a young army cadet I have very fond recollections of travelling up to Nottinghamshire to Proteus Camp for two weeks summer training, but like many of the old “minor camps” poor old Proteus has now been “mothballed” and looks to be heading the way of many MOD sites and into the hands of the developers.

Proteus was situated in in the Sherwood Forest, just North of Ollerton, and the 21-hectare site was used by the Ministry of Defence as an Army training camp until October 2004 when it sadly became surplus to requirements. The site had accommodated up to 1000 personnel at its peak along with tanks, mechanised vehicles and a small arms firing range. From the early 1940s it was used by the British and American armed forces and a significant number of barrack buildings, vehicle stores and other structures remain on the site, though it has now reverted back to the control of the land-owners.

When I first started looking at airsoft sites in this area I was certain that I would find Proteus amongst them as it is absolutely perfect for a skirmish, and even a longer duration MilSim event, but unfortunately this was not to be… what is fortunate though is that there are some quality airsoft venues in Nottinghamshire and neighbouring Lincolnshire, so without further ado let me introduce you to a few!

Lincolnshire Airsoft Club are exactly that, a cracking club that also welcomes players from around the country in search of a great day of airsoft! Combat Zone is a well-established paintball site which now doubles as an action packed and varied Airsoft skirmish venue. Filled with bunkers and trenches, a village, a church, and various other places, this is the perfect venue to experience all aspects of airsoft. The site has plenty of parking, as well as toilets. The safe area is sheltered with seating and there’s also a shooting range for testing and siting up your guns. Please note there is no fresh water on the site, nor is there hot food available. Free tea and coffee is available.

The Farm is the newest site to LAC’s stable. Situated on an old pig farm, and utilising the “sheds”, this site lends itself to urban CQB or FIBUA. With five sheds that vary in layout, length, height and lighting, the action will never be the same game day to game day!

The site offers parking and toilets, and the safe zone is indoors, sheltering you and your equipment from the elements and is well lit. Also, within the safe zone there is a fully stocked tea and coffee station, which is on a help yourself basis. Although there is no fresh water or food on site, the site shop sells a variety of snacks and drinks.

Due to the nature of this genre of airsoft, the site doesn’t allow any under 14s to attend on regular game days, however we are hosting under 14s events. The Farm not only hosts day games but also night games, and for those of you who would like your own event, that can be tailored to your needs, LAC can host private days!

During my research I also came across lindsey-airsoft.co.uk which has certainly piqued my curiosity as they seem to offer a great day out on what looks to be a challenging site; if I’m in the area I think I may just have to pay them a visit!

I’ve picked these sites as I’m sure you’ll agree that they offer a bit of everything when it comes to airsoft games, from regular skirmishes through to full-on hard and fast CQB. All of the sites listed offer a great airsoft experience, and if you’re a new player or someone that fancies having a go at airsoft then they all provide hire packages that include an eye protection, an AEG with magazines, and BBs. Some will provide protective clothing along with hot drinks and lunch too but check their websites for details of what is included, along with game day costs. All the sites also have busy, regularly updated Facebook and other social media pages which include photo galleries of both the site and past games, so these are well worth a look. If there are new sites that I’ve missed, then please do feel free to contact me and I’ll endeavour to add you in a site update at a later date!
