The Jahti Jakt brand is well established and respected in the UK. For the coming colder weather I’m looking at their Soft Shell and for contrast, Teeri Fleece jackets. The outermost clothes hunters wear is often termed the shell layer, but only if they block wind or water, or have good mechanical strength. Ideally the shell lets moisture through to the outside (hence the term breathable), while not letting wind and water pass through from the outside to the inside. While this is enabled to some degree by modern materials, even the best and most expensive involve a trade-off.
So, the material known as Soft Shell is increasingly used to describe garments that combine partial water resistance with wind breaking ability. These fabrics come in numerous varieties with many garments offering a combination, such as a wicking layer. In many cases insulation is combined in an attempt to replace several layers with a single highly flexible one.
The result is they’re often more comfortable to wear all year! Inside the lightweight Jahti Jakt Soft Shell jacket is a fleece lining. Water repellent (WP) and manufactured from 100% polyester it boasts a good selection of pockets that all close using WP repellent YKK zippers. It features two generous side pockets and a well positioned uniquely shaped left breast pocket. This is useful for holding extra ammo, small binos, rangefinder etc… To increase breathability it uses under arm ventilation in the form of two vertical zips with mesh backing.
Closure is by a full length zip that goes into a stand-up collar; the lower hem has a draw cord. Cuffs can be cinched tight to the wrists with Velcro fastenings. Internally there are two very deep open top ‘drop’ pockets directly behind the outer side pockets.
The Terri jacket is a warm and stylish, fleece lined hunting coat and oozes quality. There are zippered side pockets and a vertical slash inside pocket with zip. Leather reinforcements are used on the shoulders, chest and elbows. Though it’s classed as being 100% polyester it’s one of the most thoughtfully designed and comfortable to wear fleeces in the JJ range!
You can use it as a jacket or mid layer if the weathers harsh. The full zip up front, with relatively high stand-up collar will again be appreciated, as will the draw cord. The cuffs are doubled over to the inside where they’re double stitched and slightly gathered in and elasticated.
