Champion Jackets

Champion Jackets

Most hunters and outdoorsmen have a selection of jackets to choose from. A heavier one is ideal for colder weather but a basic, lightweight, water-resistant jacket is always a useful item of clothing to have.

This is the second time I’ve had the chance to assess outdoor attire from Champion Clothing Ltd. This time around, I’m looking at a selection of jackets that span from heavier, padded examples to very lightweight, rain-resistant ones that are well suited to warmer days and cooler evenings. All share a commonality of the build as the main body material is 100% polyester microfibre.

Material build

The importance of the Polyester microfibre material is the properties it affords the garments. By itself, Polyester is one of the strongest fabrics, with low elasticity and high resistance to shrinkage and stretching. It’s highly durable and can be washed easily and frequently. When mixed with microfibre, it then has other redeeming features, although it becomes less breathable. However, microfibre (which is typically a polyester/nylon blend) affords warmth when required and the absorbency allows the wicking away of sweat, helping to keep you feeling fresh. It’s also soft and comfortable.

On the moors

The Moorland Jacket is the one that’s of a more substantial build, for colder, inclement weather conditions. It’s extra waterproofed, has taped seams and has a 100% polyester lining. It features a generous zip-detachable hood with wide, wrap-around, Velcro-fastened, high neck protection. The full zip opening has a storm flap and a high stand-up collar.

For storage, it has 1x zipped inner pocket, 2x upper and 2x lower pockets with press stud cover flaps, plus side-entry pockets set behind. The action cut sleeves also have Velcro strap adjustable cuffs. It’s available in Olive or Navy in Sizes M-3XL.

An interesting option

The Pevensey is an interesting proposition due to its quite unique and individual styling. The polyester microfibre build has a waterproofed PVC outer, plus taped seams for extra protection from the elements. The high collar conceals a hood and when fastened up, the jacket shows a high padded collar with a neck strap. Storage is catered for by 2x upper and 2x lower cargo-style, press stud fastened over flap pockets, with side entry pockets positioned behind both lower pockets. It also has an inner pocket.

The generous cut of the jacket is complemented by adjustable press stud cuffs that help prevent water ingress. It’s available in Navy and sizes M-3XL.

The basics

The Birkdale is the most basic featured here. It has a full zip opening with a zip baffle, 1x inner pocket and the sleeves have adjustable button cuffs. It’s mesh-lined for extra comfort and the outer has a water repellent finish. It’s available in Navy or Stone in Sizes M – 3XL.

Conclusion

The Moorland is an excellent choice during changeable weather, while the Pevensey is stylish with a clever design. If you just require a jacket that offers extra protection during a slight shower, then the Birkdale will fulfil that role.
