Deben Hurricane Shooting Jacket

Deben Hurricane Shooting Jacket

Deben’s extensive product range has grown and grown over the last few years, and their clothing range is one area that has really benefited from this company’s go-ahead approach.

The rise in popularity of camouflage is also reflected in their latest offerings, and with all forms of shooting apparel available - ‘T’ shirts; gloves; fleeces, jumpers… you name it - all sporting the latest patterns, they make a good one stop for the outdoor sportsman. It’s their Hurricane jacket in particular that caught my eye, so let’s give it the once over.

The famous Realtree APG camouflage is the pattern used here, and it’s a bright, even attractive design. But one of the main features that makes this jacket so special is the incredibly soft and luxurious feel to the fabric. I’m 6’ 2”, and fairly large framed, and this test jacket was supplied in 2XL, which I’d say was a near perfect fit. Comfortable in the extreme, yet the Hurricane feels strong and robust, without being restrictive.

Features are pretty impressive, starting with the sheer warmth of the product. ‘100% waterproof yet breathable’, is the confident claim from the sales blurb, and all I can say is that I remained dry throughout some miserable outings during the test period.

A light, insulated mesh lining adds to the quality feel, whilst a chunky zip seals the front and is in turn protected with a storm-flap fastened over with studs. The raised collar design is pretty smart, and conceals an emergency hood, which whilst fairly lightweight, does the job when necessary - a welcome feature in any event.

A large ‘seat game pocket’ is accessed via a subtly concealed zip to the rear, whilst an internal ‘mobile phone pocket’ could double up as a cartridge holder. It’s handy and discreet, however you choose to use it.

Adjustable cuffs can be left open for maximum freedom when in an awkward shooting position, or closed right down if the weather is turning grim! Side hand-warmer pockets are always welcome, and again, the material adds to the snug feel here.

The star feature has to be those large ‘cargo’ shooting pockets, which come fitted with large outer flaps, that can be neatly held up and ‘open’ with the fitted magnets - a great touch - and the zipped section beneath is wide enough to allow easy access for ammunition or whatever, in the heat of the moment. A further non zipped section lies behind this, concealing a further internal flap, which can hold further cartridges.

An added bonus is the clever inclusion of an internal orange pocket containing emergency Hi-Visibility arm bands, which could well earn their keep in the future.

I’m not normally a fan of camo, but it’s difficult to ignore the appeal of this Hurricane jacket. All in all, an impressive jacket, crammed with features, and surely a bargain for the money.
