In the Ridgeline of New Zealand Clothing brand, marketed here in the UK by Highland Outdoors, there’s quite a comprehensive range of very high-quality apparel. I’ve previously had experience of certain items of this clothing in the company’s own-design ‘Buffalo Camo’, but while this option is no longer available, they do offer all in two subdued colours of Olive Green or Teak.
The Torrent Euro II Jacket is one of their best sellers and as quality comes at a price, it’s good to see the price point of this jacket is well within the reach of most pockets. Manufactured from the company’s own unique ‘seam-sealed’ 3-layer RL ‘Quiettex’ material, incorporating a 100% waterproof, breathable and windproof laminated Polyester shell, this material is also highly abrasion resistant and as the name implies – very quiet in use. The outer is soft to the touch and overall the jacket is surprisingly light in weight; so, the emphasis is very much on keeping you dry, rather than overly warm. However, it does offers a reasonable amount of padding (insulation) plus a mesh lining is in evidence, allowing the wearer to decide what to wear underneath to suit the temperature, as it is windproof and breathable.
Interestingly, the Torrent isn’t of a ‘usual’ full ¾ length design but does comfortably extend low enough below the waist to offer a satisfactory level of protection at this area. Personally, I feel some jackets can be overly long and therefore restrict movement, which is not the case here, as it has a generous yet sensible cut.
It boasts two deep, double press stud fastened cargo pockets, with two lined handwarmer chest pockets above. On the inside, you have two large zip close pockets with an extra open mesh Velcro tab fasten pocket on the inside left of the garment. The high stand up padded storm collar features a generously sized wired and 3-way drawcord toggle adjustable zip detachable peaked hood. The front fastens with a heavy-duty two-way rustproof zip and press stud down overflap, while the cuffs are part elasticated and include a Velcro strap fastener for cinching tight around the wrists. Another useful pocket is found on the inside of the storm flap. This zip fasten ‘vertical’ opener is ideal for storing your FAC, shoot permission and/or car keys. The jacket also features a vented back and generously sized underarm waterproof zip close vents for temperature regulation.
