Snugpack Sasquatch Jacket

Snugpack Sasquatch Jacket

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, one of the main tenants of my life was given to me by an old sergeant major from my army days. Quite simply he said: ‘Pte Moore any fool can be uncomfortable’, which is an undeniable truth. For me this is more about being cold or wet than being hot, as we live in the UK, which has plenty of both and little of the last. Warmth usually means big, bulky coats that do the job and I have plenty of both, but they are large and heavy and at times a pain to wear and carry.

Sasquatch

I was sent the Snugpak Sasquatch jacket. Which they describe as: “The warmest of all our insulated clothing, this substantial jacket is ideal for activities that involve little or no movement.” A statement I cannot disagree with! For high seats or fox shooting it’s ideal. Rated down to -15° C it features an integral, snorkel-type hood, thumb slot cuffs to stop the arms riding up and comes with its own stuff sack.

The outer uses a Paratex, ripstop weave material that is water/wind proof, tough and soft to the touch and quite when you move. This is lined with Softie Premier fill that shows a dense and even fibre pattern that insulates more efficiently. Apart from the good design in terms of heat retention, for me the lack of weight is another plus, as the XXL jacket weighs in at 1250-grams (44oz). Tests in the winter and at night proved it works beautifully.

heat without weight
Wearing it feels like nothing and with the stuff sack it’s an easy item to carry on your pack in the knowledge that when the temperature goes down you have a jacket that can cope. The build shows a full-length zip that pulls right up to the chin. The hood is configured with a volume adjuster that ensures the snorkel follows your face and does not restrict vision as you move. Though permanently fitted you can roll it down and secure it with an integral strap/press stud.

Stowage is good with two lower, zip-closed stand-by pockets on the outside. Inside are two opentopped mesh pouches and a zipped wallet pocket upper left. Finishing off is an adjustable drawcord at the hem. Though not long the jacket goes well down past your hips so no loss of heat there. In use the Sasquatch is simply awesome, night driving and shooting with the window open and the hood up keeps you snug. Likewise just standing around or up a cold high seat, with none of the weight and bulk of a heavy parka-style.

Available in a choice of colours – olive, black, desert tan, camo and Multicam with sizes ranging from small, medium, large, XL and 2XL, they come up a bit on the large size, which is not a problem.
