5.11 Tactical have developed a reputation for clothing that is practical, durable and won’t stand out aesthetically in public. The Chameleon Softshell jacket is a perfect example of this, featuring subtle flat dark earth hues with a practical nature giving a jacket that is ideal for a day out and about, capable of fending off the elements. It is both wind and water repellent with a brushed fleece lining and a soft shell that is comfortable and quiet.
It is cut long in the body to prevent drafts billowing up from the hem and a brushed fleece lining means contact direct to the skin never feels clammy. Hand warmer pockets contain two pull cords to cinch the whole jacket in at the waist if required.
5.11 garments have been used internationally within police environments for many years and the disguised features, at first seeming unusual, hide those law enforcement roots. Zippered compartments across the shoulders and both sides of the chest hide Velcro tabs that can be used to hold discreet I.D. markings, ready to be displayed at a moment’s notice. All three contain a plain black panel to be badged up as you wish. I wore the jacket day-to-day as a casual garment but it saw tougher use on a range day combining warm humid weather with brief squally showers. The jacket remained comfortable throughout, a high collar preventing the neck gaping open allowing rain in and chest and arm pockets conveniently handy for storage of small items and radios.
5.11 Taclite Pro Pants
The New 5.11 Taclite Pro Pants are designed for understated durability and practicality. With 65/35% Polycotton Rip stop fabric, they are the lighter version of traditional 5.11 Tactical Pants.
Functionally they are perfect for any outdoor activities, including hunting and walking, and feature a fully gusseted crotch that allows for full range of movement. Numerous pockets are located for easy access to all kinds of gear. Sturdy loops will handle a heavy belt capable of carrying bulky external kit and the Pro Pants are treated with HT Teflon Wear Resistant Finish for stain and soil resistance.
I don’t personally load up thigh pockets too heavily but the dual rear pockets have a very open design where items can be quickly stowed out of the way when shooting prone. The reinforced seat and knees gave extra comfort and didn’t allow any seepage of moisture from grassy surfaces. Promised to be fade/wear resistant and available in several colours, neat stitching and YKK zippers also inspire confidence.
The trousers were comfortable in similar weather conditions to the jacket with little moisture and zero wind penetrating the fabric, yet both allowed enough breathability so that they were never sweaty.
I have also worn the trousers extensively as `workwear` and they have proved very durable although the crotch and seat areas seem relatively baggy when standing yet true to a design heritage for active scenarios and flexibility of movement.
These 5.11 garments have discreet looks, are well-tailored and are reasonably priced at £83.99 for the 5.11 Chameleon Softshell Jacket and £43.99 for the Taclite Pro trousers (both prices include P&P). Watch out for sizing, it is generous. For more information visit www.Military1st.co.uk
