Inteliscope Pro

If you like gadgets and new technology then this is a product for you! Featured here is the Inteliscope Pro Tactical Rifle Adapter (TRA), designed to allow you to mount a smartphone to your rifle. The product consists of the mount itself, a protective cover for an iPhone and instructions to download the free app for either your Android or iPhone. The idea of this product is to run software that uses the processing power and high-quality camera of your smartphone to transform it into a digital scope.

The Mount

The mount is simple and pretty rugged, being of all-metal construction with a tactile rubber finish. It fits onto any standard Picatinny/Weaver rail using two screws that can be done up by hand. This means that it can fit onto a variety of equipment such as rifles, airsoft guns, paintball guns or even a crossbow! If you only have dovetails then you will need to get an adapter (such as the one made by Truglo) which converts dovetails into a Picatinny/Weaver rail.

The phone is secured to the mount by a three-point clamp which allows for a wide variety of phones to be secured. The literature quotes a maximum screensize of 3.2-inches but I found the mount also comes with an extra long screw which allows the telescopic arm to extend further to accommodate the larger mobile phones. I used it for my LG G2 which has a 5.2-inch screen!

The Software

After doing some research and using the Inteliscope software it quickly became apparent just how much potential this product has. The primary reasons for its use are to allow you to take pictures and videos while you shoot, which is what most people will no doubt use it for. It is worth bearing in mind the many reasons why you may want to record your shots, for me the first thing that springs to mind is just how useful this would be as a training aid, as you would be able to go over the footage in your own time. When using your phone as a scope there are a few advantages over a conventional scope. Eye relief is no longer a problem, and neither is eye dominance as you can keep both eyes open while using it. The scope works as normal when zeroing, allowing you to adjust windage and elevation. An important point worth mentioning is that Inteliscope offers a far greater range of adjustment than a conventional scope.

Two problems I came across during the test were glare on the screen and how to rest the rifle on the ground without damaging the phone. I noticed on the manufacture’s website that someone has already asked if a shroud/shade could be manufactured as they have obviously encountered the same problems.

Very Flash

Another useful feature is that you can edit the pre-set guns or create your own gun profiles. For example I used the Inteliscope on my Weihrauch HW98 so created a profile which included weapon type, ammo name, zero range, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient and drag model. Using this data the app will act as a ballistic calculator – select the range that you are shooting at and the app will try and adjust accordingly (you can select from 10- to 300-metres).

Inteliscope also makes the most of your flash, allowing you to use it as a flashlight or a strobe. If you are connected to the internet then the app can also provide a compass and wind speed which is very useful.

Conclusion

Priced at £139.95, the mount does look expensive for what it is but really it’s the downloadable app that you are paying for. The potential for this product is huge and its only limitation is your phone. I found the clarity and the size of crosshair/aimpoint only allowed me shoot at limited ranges with my phone, and when zooming in the image became blurred and the point of impact changed. This did not concern me as this will almost certainly change depending on your phone. I would highly recommend downloading the Inteliscope app for free and testing out the features on your phone.

Overall although not perfect it is clear that the software is undergoing continuous development especially on the Android version that I was using. As phone technology and development goes on, this product will become more and more appealing. Keep an eye on this!
