InovaTec Service bore sighters adaptors

InovaTec Service bore sighters adaptors

A laser bore sighter is without doubt a useful piece of equipment and is mainly seen as an item for scoped sporting rifles, in terms of setting up and checking zero. In the latter case and if for any reason your rifle/scope combo gets knocked, it will allow you to determine if it will still shoot straight and also re-adjust. There are a number of systems available and InovaTec use and distribute Osprey Laser Bore Sights, which I have looked at before. However, they have taken it a bit further, as I discovered at this year’s CLA Game Fair.

Push-in & Twist

The Osprey system uses a series of calibre-specific chamber adaptors; essentially a special, dummy cartridge case that accepts the laser projector. It needs to be small and in this case it’s built into a 223 Remington platform that slides into the hollow base of the larger adaptors.

It runs off three LR41 watch-type batteries and ON/OFF function is controlled by a simple, screw-in base cap. This means you have to turn it on before inserting it into the chamber adaptor. One very important thing to bear in mind is the fact that you should not dry fire the rifle with the laser unit chambered, as you run the risk of damaging the base with the firing pin, which happened to me on my first test of the product. The beauty of the system is that you only need to buy one laser, then if you have more than one calibre just add adaptors as required.

As I said these devices are primarily associated with sporting calibres – 243/308 Win etc. But what InovaTec envisaged and have now implemented is a more across the board policy that will include those that shoot military-types rifles. To this end they have had made up a series of the more popular Service rounds as chamber adaptors.

Four Classics

I have four here on test – 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser, 303 British, 7.62x54mm R (Rimmed) Russian and 7.92mm Mauser (8x57mm), however, InovaTec offer others too. Dimension-wise all are correct and load and eject easily. Osprey provides a nylon punch that allows you to push out the laser unit when you have finished.

The beam centralises in the bore due to the adaptor and is non-adjustable, all it does it to offer a fixed reference point for the sights. This will allow you to get the sights (scope or irons) all pointing in the right direction that can and does save time and ammunition when zeroing.

Likewise once you have set the sights it’s an easy matter to note, at your zero distance the relationship of the red dot to the sight picture. Which will allow a check and return to zero (if necessary) if your scope gets knocked. Nothing really new or radical here, apart from the fact the system can now be used as easily by those who shoot Service rifles as sporters.

For: Practical and easy bore sighter system
Against: Not a lot
Verdict: Now includes Service rifle calibres; smart move…
