KG Rifle & Pistol Pack

KG Rifle & Pistol Pack

Cleaning your guns is not the most exciting subject, however, for optimum performance it’s essential. For at least the last decade, products have come on in leaps and bounds, as has the requirements of ‘health & safety’ being more relevant. In response, manufacturers have not only made their potions more efficient but safer too. Like I said, things have moved on and there’s now no excuse to have a dirty gun!

Pack mentality

A name that’s been around a long time is KG Industries, who offer a massive range of product, as well as coating systems. The importers (Viking Arms) sent me what I consider a practical kit for the rifle shooter; The Rifle & Pistol Pack. Also, as the distributor of Sure Shot they sent a large (308 upwards) rod, spear point jag, brush and a pack of 300 round patches. Sensibly these are not calibre-specific and can be used in many different bores, as the diameter of the jag is what adapts the patch to the barrel.

The Rifle & Pistol Pack includes KG1 Carbon Remover, KG3 Solvent and De-greaser, KG4 Gun Oil and KG12 Copper Solvent. They call KG1 a carbon remover, but it works as a general bore cleaner and should be considered as such; I used it on several rifles with good effect, but as luck would have it my Browning Maral in 30-06 really does copper up badly. Some rifles do, others don’t but this one is red after 20-shots. So, a good test for the KG12.

The process

story continues below...

My cleaning regime is simple, a patch on the spear point jag soaked in KG1 is run up the bore and left to soak (KG says 2-minutes) but I leave it longer. Then a scrub out with the brush also soaked in KG1 to remove the residue. Then patch out with the jag until they come out clean, my older Sure Shot patches are square, and I found the round ones much more efficient! The rod is stainless steel with an aluminium rotary handle, which makes things easier.

Time to look into the muzzle and check for copper deposits; a blind man could have seen it in the Maral’s bore! Instructions say; patch out with the KG12 and leave for 30 seconds then check for copper, if not repeat. After four applications and some elbow grease, this did the trick! I hasten to add that some of my other guns do not need such heavy applications, it’s just down to the barrel metal used and rifling form as the Maral has four, slim lands with wide grooves that doubtless attracts the copper.

It’s then recommended to use the KG3 to remove any reside then clean with KG1 and finally if you intend to store the rifle a wipe through with the KG4. Pre-firing, a quick swab with KG3 will remove the oil then evaporate, leaving the rifle ready to shoot.
