Lawrence Precision Titanium

Lawrence Precision Titanium

Having already visited to review the Aurora range of moderators for BASC’s Shooting and Conservation magazine I was pleasantly surprised to receive another call from proprietor Simon Lawrence to look at another new designs; both are also built from several purpose-made special high grade Titanium (Ti) alloys. This makes for an ultimately strong, light and durable moderator that will never burn out and makes a great product that is designed to last a lifetime. The two new models are known as Nexus and the Eclipse and have been under development for about the last nine months. Both are intended to extend Lawrence Precision’s range of moderators to cater for all shooters’ needs.

Why Titanium?

Ti is 40% lighter, but much stronger and tougher than steel or stainless steel, whilst being nearer to aluminium in weight and density. It is a flexible material and capable of taking immense pressure and heat without cracking, warping or burning out. Lawrence moderators contain no welded components to go wrong and Ti contains no iron, so it cannot rust. Additionally they do not ‘ring’ like steel, so are quiet once a shot has been made.
I have owned an Aurora for over a year now and its taken everything I have thrown at it, including heavy rain, grit and the odd unfortunate knock, but its still there as good as new and doing sterling service. My previous steel moderator needed replacing after 5 years so to obtain a moderator which I am in no doubt will last a lifetime instead of a new steel one every 3 years at around £250 a time had to be the sensible option. The Nexus and Eclipse simply provide more options to compliment any rifle, calibre and application.
Specifications

The Nexus, measures 42mm around the outer diameter, is 26cm long and weighs a mere 420 grams. The Eclipse is what Simon terms a “full bodied” moderator. It is aimed at T8 fans who require a high level of sound attenuation, but wish to keep weight from the muzzle. The Eclipse is 50mm around the outer diameter, 26cm long and weighs 450 grams. Both the Nexus and Eclipse sleeve back over the barrel to keep overall firearm length to a minimum. They each have 10 baffles; each one precision cut from a solid titanium bar.

Field Testing

On the range the Nexus and Eclipse both proved to be very quiet, improving rifle handling and balance amazingly. During my tests using a .270Win and .308Win they reduced muzzle blast and flip to the point where they made my rifles a new experience to shoot. The Nexus is described by Simon as being for firearms where physical size and attenuation are equally important; however the first thing that struck me about the Eclipse was how light it was, whilst still maintaining fuller attenuation and handling.

The whole experience of the Nexus and Eclipse and the attention to detail is quite impressive. They are very light, perform well and are truly built to last. Lawrence Precision now offer two new special anodised finishes; matt black to match the barrels on Blaser, Mauser, Sauer, Steyr Mannlicher etc. and a high polished gloss black which closely matches good quality blued barrels.

As for price, all of Simon’s moderators are currently around the £595 mark, but when you take into account that these moderators will probably outlast your rifle, then they can be considered value for money. Simon is also working on some other innovative shooting accessories for release in the near future so watch this space!
