New Macc Tecc Accurate Foxer reflex moderators

Last year I started testing a new moderator from Edgar Brothers. I also had the pleasure of meeting the inventor - a decidedly clever fellow and also keen shooter/ hunter who under his banner of the Barton Gun Works produces the Macc Tecc Accurate Hunter (patented) exclusively for Edgars. In a nut shell it’s a small and light muzzle-mounted design. A good call as it does the job with pretty much any calibre and for a carry gun keeps the extra size and weight to a minimum. However, and regardless of how you feel about it most shooters will favour a reflex (over-barrel) design over a muzzlemounted can; that’s just the way it is!

REFLEX PLEASE

I have an Accurate Hunter in 6.5mm for my three 6.5 rifles – Grendel, Creedmoor and Swede and it’s a good one. I asked about a reflex and was told it might be in the offing and now it is in the form of the Accurate Foxer (patented). What impressed me initially was its size and weight. It’s slightly slimmer than the 44mm Hunter at 41mm though is obviously longer but not by much at 162mm to 112mm. Weight-wise it’s only 20-grams heavier at 220-grams; overall an impressive specification!

In terms of build it looks like the Foxer is just a Hunter with a short expansion chamber at the rear. Visually I’m guessing that the insides are identical in both layout and dimensions, I say this as they are both sealed units and the internals are off limits! I was sent two; one in 223 Rem and the other in - you guessed it - 6.5. I mentioned that my 223 was a Mauser M03 with a 14x1mm thread with spigot and they supplied a drop-in alloy spacer to take up the spigot’s shank dimension for a snug fit. However there’s no rear bushing, meaning it will align naturally, which is better. Also the rear (exterior) face of the expansion chamber is chamfered in to stop lamp reflection. Good idea!

YARD STICK

I used my 6.5x55 M03 barrel for control firing both 140 and 156-grain loads, average speeds here at around 2350 to 2450 fps accordingly. The Accurate Hunter is a known quantity and does the job well with a flat discharge and no issues on spiking at the ear. Without doubt the Accurate Foxer brings that down even more and offers no weight or length penalties, as that extra 20-grams is negligible (on-gun)!

To my ears the biggest revelation was the 223 version. I was shooting GECO 56-grain Express, which is clocking around 3150 fps from the M03 and that sounded exceptionally quiet. A sort of dull blat, I know we all hear things differently and materials dimensions and construction of individual moddies plays a big part. But to my Mk 1 ear it seemed like the quietest 223 can I have used to date!
