OtterBoxes

Recently I happened upon a series of waterproof cases that would suit all outdoor activities, particularly hunting and fishing. Called Otter Boxes they are handled by Whitby and Co. A quick e-mail latter, I had a small selection to check out. Of main interest are the waterproof series! The range consists of Series 1000 up to 8000. Basically the higher the number the larger the size, the exception is the 8000, which are more specialised for specific needs.
Made from a hi-impact polymer, they’re rated waterproof down to 100ft, crushproof, airtight and they float. OtterBox use the term DryBox when referring to them, which is an apt description. The build goes for a piano hinge with high grade stainless steel pins on one side and one or two clip-over catches (depending on box size) that locks the lid down securely on the reverse. With full rubber seals no water is getting inside these babies!
Bomb-Proof
There’s an integral lanyard hole (lanyard supplied) and locking hasps for a padlock. Inside is a semi-rigid foam lining to protect the contents. The 1000 series are the smallest but still useful and measures 3.7 X 2.3 X 1.0” inside and 4.8 X 3.6 X 1.6” externally. They use a single clip closure and are available in Clear or Black the former being ideal for a mobile or small walky talky.
Next the 2000 and 2500 series, the 500 nomenclature indicates the same length and width but a 1/3rd deeper. For instance the 2000 measures 5.7 X 3.1 X 0.97” internally and 6.8 X 4.5 X 1.8” externally. This 500 rating can be used as a rule of thumb across the range until we come to the 8000 series as here the design/shape changes as they’re intended to be belt-mounted. The lid is narrower, but just as robust as the rest. They feature belt clips as well as lanyard points. Useful for keeping kit to hand such as compact to medium binoculars etc…
There’s an Otter Box to suit almost all eventualities and when you get to the 3250 series you’re looking at something that would hold ammunition etc., whereas the lower capacity 2000 or 2500 (in Clear) would be ideal for holding a first aid kit. Larger models, which come with hinged handles and are ideal for accessories or NV kit and could even be used as hard range bags. Prices look keen, certainly when compared to market leaders like Pele. Take a look at what they have to offer as I’m certain there will be one, or more you cannot do without!
