SP Sight

SP Sight

Using the wrong eye is a common shotgun problem. SP offers a new eye dominance and controlling sight. It’s a small device that attaches to the side of the rib that joins over & under guns. It’s more a peripheral aid so the dominant eye chooses the image to aim with and not your other eye. So, your brain closes off the other eyes image and focusses, literally on the correct view, be you shooting gun down or up.

Fitting

It comes in a tin with, self-adhesive strips and cleaning swab. Clean the barrel joining rib about 1-2” back from the muzzles. Remove the backing tape and lightly position it as you might need to re-position it. Hold the gun in the ready position and close your left eye (right for left handers) and now you should see the sight. In the same stance now close your right eye (left eye for lefties) and you shouldn’t be able to see it with your left eye. Reposition it if you need to until it’s no longer in your vision. When happy, press it down for 10 seconds which activates the adhesive and sets it solid.

Gun down shooting procedure; as you mount the gun you will notice the SP with your shooting eye but not the other. It is important to focus on the clay and not the sight. If it’s in your peripheral vison it’s working correctly, as you need to keep both eyes open whilst shooting. In this way the brain chooses the correct image with the SP in and not the wrong eye. If you don’t see it your mount has changed and so it can be corrected, as it’s a sub conscious reminder without actually looking at it.

Gun up

This is handy for Trap or Sporting layouts; with the gun mounted the SP might be in vison all the time, so the dominant eye should still see the correct position of each shot. You can adjust it further up the barrel for clear vison and the eye gets used to it being in that position and the other eye’s vision is not used in preference.

Set up on a Browning 20 bore and after trial and error I had it just perfect, so that from right shoulder and with both eyes open, only my right eye saw the SP. This automatically means the brain used this as the aiming eye for the rib. It won`t work if you just use one eye closed. Also, parallax effect means the barrels at first my appear as a split image, if you are not used to shooting with both eyes open. So, practice mounting in front of a mirror to becoming familiar with the technique and both eyes open.

Dominant

Once mounted shoot quickly, as if your non aiming eye is more dominant it might take over. However, with practice the correct eye that sees the SP can be trained to be more dominant. If lighting conditions are tricky or low, a glance at the sight helps engage the eye momentarily before the shot. There are low light and coloured versions available to suit. Practice is the key and stick with it and you will see an improvement and will become second nature.
