Lenser LED headlights

Lenser LED headlights

There does not seem a month goes by without some new lighting system appearing. To prove this I have some head lamps from a company called LED Lenser (LL). The name might not be that familiar but the range is extensive and also includes gun-mountable and handheld torches. These will have to wait until another time as first I’ve picked a couple of models I feel capably show the main features that are found throughout all models.

Typical

The H5 is typical of many LL headlights in that it uses a high end LED bulb at the front with a rear-mounted battery pack on an adjustable/elasticated headband. It comes with a Neoprene belt pouch and 3 XAAA batteries. The lamp head can swing through 90° vertically and the output is 26-Lumens which on concentrated beam illuminates out to approximately 75-yds. On top of the lamp body is the ON/OFF switch and directly below a lever that operates the Advanced Focus System.

When moved left, the lamp housing actually extends outwards to change the beam from flood through to tight spot. I’ve never seen this on any headlight before and this plus the strong lamp casing raises these headlights above many others. Another feature, not on the H5, but used on quite a few others models in the range, is a lever on top of the battery pack that operates a dimmer facility – also very useful.

3-in-1

If it’s high power, versatility and functions you need then look no further than the more specialised H14 Headlight. Termed a 3-in-1, you can use it as a headlight, belt lamp and mobile search/work light. Having a much more substantial lamp head it also needs 4 X AAA batteries (included) to power it. Housed in the rear mounted battery pack this also holds the rubberised ON/OFF switch and has a battery status indicator.

The beam focus system on this model is again telescopic but you have to manually pull the inner casing forward to change beam width. Again using a high end LED, this model has a 210-Lumen rating and projects its intense beam out to approximately 200-yds. To use the 3-in-1 facility, the lamp and battery unclip from there backplates that remain on the headband. These units show integral belt clips, which enables them to be linked together to form a work light with the battery as the base or you can clip both onto your belt. A small extension lead is supplied for ease of belt positioning should you want to place the battery further from the lamp.

If you’re happy using a single colour, unfiltered, white light source then I’ve seen very few if any headlights as well featured, of such build quality and displaying performance levels such as these.

FOR - Well built, with unique and practical features
AGAINST - White light only; is that a problem?
VERDICT - Do not overlook this brand as it has a lot to offer
