Deben Tracer Sport Gun Light

Deben Tracer Sport Gun Light

These days with the proliferation of gun-mountable torches we tend to forget about gun lamps. Bigger and perhaps a bit clumsy they have been a main stay for many years! What I have here is Deben’s latest from their new Tracer range the Sport Gun Light 140. The designation indicates a 140mm lens, and a 170 model is also available.

ALL-INCLUSIVE

The lamp includes mains charger, socket adaptor for running it from a vehicle, plug-in cable/switch unit, a 1” and 30mm rings and Allen keys for the scopes body tube. Designed for gun-mounting the body features an arm at the rear which ends in a Weaver-type base, which allows scope mounting. The head has the ability to angle through 10° via a rotary drum, allowing you to quickly fine tune the point of aim with the beam centre.

There are two versions of the in-line switch, the standard ON/OFF unit or the variable power (VP), which features an integral rotary rheostat. They come with adhesive Velcro pads to fit on the forend. Optional accessories include a series of snap-on filters – red, amber, green, blue and infrared. The Sport Light runs on a 12 V system. The 140 uses a 50 W vertical filament halogen bulb and the 170 a 75W unit. Deben quotes a maximum range of 400 and 600m accordingly, which I though a tad optimistic!

POWER UP

Deben included their new 22 Ah Lithium Polymer power pack. This the biggest from a range that includes 4, 8, 10 and 14 Ah options. It is light and compact at 161x115x56mm and 2.75 lbs. With a rubber-armoured body and an LED charge indicator display it comes with mains and vehicle charger and socket adaptor that accepts the cigarette lighter type plug-in. Charge time is 14-20 hours and run time varies according to the bulb uses – 50W – 4hr 20mins, 75W – 3hs 15mins and 100W – 2hr 10mins. In continuous use I was getting around 2 ¾-hours from the 50W lamp.

In use the 140 proved easy to fit and light and compact enough not to influence rifle use disproportionally. The battery comes with a case and belt loop, but a shoulder strap would also have been useful, as though light compared to a lead/acid type it’s still a lump to carry! The beam pushes out a slightly warmer white light than the LEDs we are now used to. Maximum effective range is about 200-250-yards given the conditions though you can pick up eyes further out. But you do get a decent wide beam that is easy to locate the target in and place your cross hair, plus the advantage of quickly adjusting from tight to flood beam spread. Equally I found the ability to angle the lamp up or down to coincide with your scope very useful too.
