Nightmaster Venom Strike

Nightmaster Venom Strike

Night Master has had an unprecedented impact onto the night hunting scene – their first offering being a high power IR (Infra-Red) torch that ticked all the right boxes with the very first roll of the dice for use with dedicated NV units. Since then the company has developed upon the original design further to bring us a powerful high spec’ LED torch the NM800 and the lower power and more airgun friendly NM400. The major facility that these units have that makes them so popular is the modular design which enables the original ‘pre-chosen’ LED to be changed for another colour option or for a NV dedicated IR LED.

When bought in kit format, you get the Venom Master Torch (with LED colour option of choice), high scope mount, 1 X 18650 rechargeable battery, dual bay mains charger, remote pressure pad switch plus spare ‘O’ ring seals. It can also run on 2 X CR123A Lithium Batteries – not supplied and it’s not a bad idea to carry a couple of these disposables as a backup.

MODULAR

Manufactured from aircraft grade aluminium, measuring 183mm long and weighing 250 grams without batteries, it’s also constructed to be waterproof to IPX-8 standard and there’s no doubting that this hard black anodised finish torch is obviously well built.

The design is modular which means it can be unscrewed to be broken down into the major component parts that make up its entirety. From the front these include lamp head including bezel, the interchangeable LED module, battery tube/body and of course the multi-function tail cap assembly. Before detailing how to change the various LED ‘modules’ available there’s more to look at with the torch itself!

Particularly worthy of note is the unique tail cap which includes a ‘glow in the dark’ yellow/green on/off switch for quick activation while around this is a ridged outer edge rotary collar/dial that controls the brightness. This enables the user to quickly attain the exact amount of light for the situation in hand. Set up as I would use it - and I imagine other hunters too - it will be scope-mounted using the large, fig-8 split clamp supplied, in conjunction with removing the tail cap assembly and fitting the remote so you can control it from the rifle leaving both hands free to get on with the job.

The remote has a generous but not an overlong section of coiled then straight section of lead that runs to the elongated oblong shape pressure pad switch. This of course can be mounted anywhere on the stock the shooter prefers using twin-sided Velcro pads in the normal manner. The beam can also be changed from spot to flood by simply rotating the focusable head/convex lens assembly, so making it even more versatile!

PICK ‘N’ MIX

As briefly mentioned earlier it’s the fact the torch’s LED can be changed for another colour option or IR LED that has put the Night Master series of torches ‘into the spotlight’ so to speak. When you purchase the torch you stipulate which colour of LED you require. This can be white, red, green or a dedicated IR LED for use with Nightvision kit. The interchangeability of the LED modules is simplicity itself and any other colour option (or IR) is purchased as an optional extra. To change the LED you first unscrew the head and bezel section. This reveals the LED but this ‘module’ also can then be unscrewed from the main battery body/tube. Once removed you then simply screw on an alternative LED module of choice, replace the lamp head onto the front and you’re good to go.

CONCLUSIONS

The Night Master Venom Strike is rated at being able to put a full power concentrated beam out to approximately 600 yds with a continuous run time of approximately 3hrs using the re-chargeable cell supplied. During test I had no problem clearly detecting rabbit size quarry out to 500yds+. Also due to the high level of beam spread adjustment offered by the special lens and rotating bezel head the beam can be concentrated so tightly you can actually make out the profile of the unit’s square shape LED.

It’s only when you begin to widen the beam it takes on a more conventional shape. The ability to change LED’s is a unique and superb feature and is a great way to adapt your torch without having to use a filter which will reduce the performance of the ‘piercing’ light. The pressure switch operates positively and the rear position rotary rheostat in the tail cap unit offers an unrivalled level of adjustment. Also once set on a particular level and switched off, due to the memory function once turned on it lights up at the previous setting.

If you’re looking for a ‘lighting system’ that’s capable of close range ratting, medium to longer range rabbit shooting and even sensible range foxing there’s no doubt that the Venom Strike is capable of fulfilling all of your night hunting requirements.
