Jack Pyke Tundra Boots

Fit For Anything
Pete Wadeson tests the Tundra Boots from Jack Pyke and is more than a little impressed at the rugged build quality and cosmetics…

It seems Jack Pyke have had a total blitz through their clothing and footwear range and decided to add to it or improve certain products they felt could be bettered. A good example is their new Tundra boot in their own English Oak Camo. Though looking good the design is not just about cosmetic cool!

FORMIDABLE
Standing 10 ½” high it’s a formidable design. Lacing consists of three, fixed loops, backed up by four speed hooks and a wide gape that allows an easy on/off! There’s also a padded bellows tongue which also has plenty of protective padding yet isn’t overly stiff. The fixed loops retainers are interesting due to the fact each one is made up of heavy duty fabric the lace passes through. Apparently this is a design that allows this area to be more forgiving and flex as you walk without any loss in strength or fit.

story continues below...

The outer is made up of 900 D coated heavyweight Cordura. Jack Pyke have cleverly over laid panels of the same material onto the base layer that makes up the boot so in fact the entire mid section is double strength, while the instep is a single layer affording freedom of movement as you walk. So where you need the main support on a boot such as this it’s doubled with an extra panel of 900D Cordura to give added protection yet with another added bonus in that it also allows the boot to be light in weight. The sole is full rubber with a well designed and structured cleat layout and a useful toe rise where it meets the extra strengthening given by the generous outer rubber toe cover. Closer inspection shows the English Oak camo pattern actually reaches down to cover the rubber rand right down to show the slightest side view of outsole.

200g of Thinsulate insulation is used for warmth and a HydroGuard membrane affords the boots to be fully waterproof and breathable. There does seem to be a trend now for camo boots so yet again are we in part following our American counterparts? In this respect I’d say no as they fit in perfectly with everything JP do in clothing for the hunter in this pattern – in fact I reckon they’ll be so popular they’ll need to bring them out in English Woodland as well.

FOR: Robust and rugged yet comfortable
AGAINST: Not a Lot
VERDICT: A good quality product at very reasonable prices
