Salomon XA Forces Mid Boots

› The XA Forces Mid Boots are ideal for the coming spring days where the lighter weight on your feet will put a seasonal spring in your step. These boots feature a Quicklace system that uses a very slim lace and sprung buckle that allows immediate tension release to open the boot. Simply step in, and then haul up the desired tension with the rubber padded loop and drop the sprung buckle to lock it. I have the coyote colour and the construction is neat with no loose stitches or glue overspill.
Salomon states foot support and protection, without any statements of ankle support, which I think is fair because although a lower fit, they do seem to offer great stability from the stiffer midsole and ankle sidewalls without sacrificing underfoot feel for the terrain. The soles also grip rocks in the wet but are not the deep tread designed for more arduous conditions.
Technical looks
The overall build is leather and a heavy Cordura-type textile for durability. Specific tough rubber protection is added at the tip of the toe and the instep. In use, the boots feel lighter than their measured weight of 626-grams each (size 46).
The boots are offered in UK sizes 3.5 to 15, which is a fair spread and reflects the unisex nature of the design. Plus, there is a detailed online fitting guide for either male or female size equivalents.
The textile lining appears to do a decent job of wicking moisture, but remember this is not a waterproof boot, but that has advantages for better breathability.
Reality strikes
Unlike rotary lacing systems with a metal wire tensioner, I haven’t found Salomon’s boots to exhibit any noise when walking, and they offer foot and ankle protection without undue bulk. I would say though, that I’m a consistent 45 in 99.9% of boots I have ever worn, and these needed to be a 46, as they are a slightly less generous fit. This is with spring/summer weight socks, not heavy woollen winter socks. I’m really attracted to the ease and speed of fitting and removal without any attached sacrifice, so these are hopefully going to be in use for quite some time.
The deep V-shape above the heel offers plenty of space for your Achilles, yet the stiff construction allows you to step in and out so easily and quickly, which is a factor I really want in a mid-season boot. The midsole is stiff, but the flexible toe area keeps them comfortable and tactile when driving and for more urban and dry environments. The technical looks really combine practicality with support and there are no cumbersome drawbacks or militaristic looks.
