Viper Tactical Boots

Viper Tactical Boots

Before hunters such as me knew you could get dedicated clothing and footwear for hunting, it was a trip to the local Army & Navy stores for our clobber. DPM Jackets and trousers were the norm and a pair of sturdy boots, though we did gravitate towards footwear aimed more at the rambler or hiking enthusiast. Depending on how you see it, we might now have too much choice, but now and again a product surprises you in the sense that although part generic in style, it benefits from the advancements in materials at the manufacturers disposal. This definitely applies to the Tactical Boots from Viper, the police and military branch of Thatchreed who of course are also home to the Jack Pyke brand.

Standing Tall

As the name suggests, you can’t just pass these off as old-style military boots. Standing 10” high from the sole to the front padded top section these really are a consideration for their rugged build, durability and inherent flex. A modern design, they incorporate all the hi-tech materials we have come to associate with modern footwear. All-black they use a Thinsulate membrane for insulation coupled with a Breatha-tex ‘inner skin’ that offers complete water and windproof abilities yet remaining capable of allowing the foot to breath. In other words they keep out the elements but still allow sweat to evaporate to the outside of the fabric, so keeping feet dry and comfortable.

The boots are classed as having a full grain, action leather upper. The ‘flex’ I referred to earlier is due to the 1200D Nylon panels seen as lower and upper side sections. Though the heel and toe are reinforced the construction is such that a good compromise between strength and flexibility has been achieved. Interestingly the fastening is classed as a non metallic speed lacing system. This consists of four fixed loops, topped by two speed hooks and an eyelet at the top for tying off.

Non Aggressive

The cleats aren’t as aggressive as you would imagine and neither is the sole overly thick or rigid. Again, in-keeping with the flexibility I referred to previously, and a Tactical-style military boot. The cleats are interesting in respect of the configuration, shape and size of the lugs. Yet again, these just give the boot more appeal as they offer good traction on general terrain with the feel of a softer sole suited to stalking bunnies by day or night.

Double stitched, ribbed, ridged and padded in all the right places I’ve really taken to these boots and I bet there’ll be a good few rabbits not liking me wearing them this summer.

For: Good lightweight boot
Against: Low price might put you off
Verdict: They look to be a good, fair weather boot
