LR Active Range Boots

LR Active Range Boots

Now this is what I call an acid test for footwear – no company blurb raving over-inflated claims, just a plain white box containing a pair of boots. A few lines on a website about insulation, waterproofing and them being breathable and that’s it. My brief; get ‘em on your ‘plates of meat’ and get yomping!

So now you know as much as I did, as I ventured into the unknown wearing a pair of Ranger Boots marketed by Irish-based LR Active Ltd. There are two versions of this boot, the standard size Ranger (on test) and a high leg version.

Camo Daisies

The first thing that you cannot fail to notice is the Ranger’s camo finish. Though not LR Active’s own-design, TreeDeep™ is similar but lighter in hue. It has reminders of Advantage Wetlands and APG, but on the whole the pattern is best described as ‘non-descript’. Truth is you don’t really need camo boots but a lot of people like the look…

The main section is manufactured from leather with a tough Cordura/Nylon band along the side and on the upper and extra padded top section. The Ranger stands 8” high at the back rising up to 10” to the wide throat and generously sized and padded tongue at the front. You can easily feel the internal padding, and see a breathable ‘mesh’ lining so indications of the boots properties are already in evidence before putting them on.

Lacing consists of four, fixed loops at the bottom with five speed hook sets at the top. There’s a waterproof membrane incorporated in the build, and I should know having worn them while slogging over many sodden stubble fields this winter.

Benefits

This has also made me realise the benefits of the tough, rugged rubber soles. The build here goes for upsweeps under the toe and heel, which allows for a comfortable rolling gait. The sole shows a generous tread pattern with a mixture of opposing triangles and areas of small raised dimple-like grips. This configuration really does work to give a secure foothold in wet/muddy conditions, plus the general build offers good side and rear support too.

After testing many well known brands of similar footwear I can honestly say these are very well made with double stitching being used at all critical areas. For a boot that won’t or can’t boast of any well know trade names for the materials used in the manufacture, the Ranger is impressive in terms of lightness and strength, as well as comfort and performance.

PRICE:
£69.99p for boot tested. Ranger High Boot £89.99p. Both are available in sizes 7 – 12
