However, those who wear them as standalone garments come spring and the better weather are more critical of their ability to retain heat and resist water. The two fleeces I have here are from Garlands and are more along the style of those worn for rough shooting or thrown on to add extra warmth. Though the first is a stylish and practical garment for any outdoor activity.
This one is a 400g fleece jacket with nylon inner. Of the heavier build it features an exterior zip front left breast pocket with two more positioned on the upper inner chest area. There are two hand warmer types too and all are lined. Talking of which, the interior has a water resistant Nylon lining with suede on the relatively high collar offering extra warmth, protection and comfort.
It has a ¾ length design with an inner drawcord waist with toggle adjusters. The front full length double zipper is part protected by suede piping and the cuffs are elasticated. Available in green only in sizes S – XXL, this is a very useful fleece to have in the back of the motor at all times.
Next up is the Fleece Shooting Jacket. It offers a traditionally style with two, open topped, bellows-type pockets at the front, a heavy duty double zip front, high back stand up collar to keep out the wind and elasticated cuffs. It boasts a soft touch inner and is nicely padded to combat the elements; though slightly shorter than the Fleece Jacket it features a part elasticated cinched section at the waist. You can’t fail to notice the brown-ribbed, synthetic fibre, front shoulder patches, well padding for left or right handed shooters to securely mount the gun. Available in blue or green and in sizes S – XXXL, despite the keen pricing it’s still a functional and useful garment.
I have to mention the curiously named Niffi Sweater. This is not a fleece but a double knitted crew neck with raglan sleeves made from 100% wool. This is something you can’t wait to throw on after a long day out in the cold or if taking the dogs out for a walk. Unique to Garlands, apparently quite a goodly amount of top grade wool was sourced to create the ultimate, chunky, fisherman-style sweater. Get one while you can as they’re selling like hot cakes. Available in green, brown or oatmeal and sizes M – XXL.
My verdict: these are all quality garments that make a mockery of the bargain basement price tags.
For: A practical range of garments
Against: Don’t be fooled by the price
Verdict: Good kit and great prices
PRICE: £29.95, £29.95 & £19.95 respectively
