Ridgeline Monsoon Classic Jacket

Ridgeline are a New Zealandbased clothing company that has really made its mark in the UK in the last few years. Initially, they, as with all new things, were viewed with some scepticism, but today have proven themselves time and time again in all conditions. When she who must be obeyed asked me to get a smock for her, I obviously got right on it and managed to order in the coat instead by mistake, only to find that it met with her approval, thankfully.
The Monsoon Classic in teak (sort of brown colour, green is also available), is made from Ridgeline’s top of the line RL-TEX PRO fabric, which is a 3-layered laminated shell, with a waterproof rating of 10k mm and a breathability rating of 5k g/m2. The truth is I have no real idea what that all means, but it does keep the rain out really well. Also; breathable enough to stop the wearer from getting sweated up when wearing it on a wet, but not overly cold day, especially when exerting oneself carrying deer out from the field.
The inner is black and has a smooth gloss finish, allowing ease of movement over clothing underneath, preventing snagging. The outer has a dull, brushed finish, similar to that of a fleece garment and most importantly is very quiet when moving. The coat is long enough to keep a good part of the thighs dry and slightly longer at the back, so as not to get a wet backside, even when sitting down and there’s a draw cord at the waist. The non-detachable hood with wired peak can be folded in on itself and is complimented nicely by the high storm collar. Cuffs can be closed with Velcro straps.
There are three pockets, two on the sides and a Napoleon-type on the left breast with flap and press stud closure. All have zip closures with rubber seals to give extra water repellence and provide a practical amount of space for small items, like ammo, phones etc. Closure is by a full-length zip, with studded storm flap for extra security. Inner seams are all sealed and all the stitching is well done
Overall, this is a very well-made coat for any outdoor activity, that the user can feel confident in its ability. My only two small niggles are it has no inner pocket and the front zip cannot be opened from the bottom if desired. These may seem overly picky, but for me it would turn a well-made and practical garment into a truly excellent one. The only other problem is now I have seen this one, I want one for myself, but can I really justify yet another coat when Christmas is so far away? All in, if deer stalking, sitting in a pigeon hide or just out for a walk, I do not really see how anyone could be disappointed with Ridgeline’s Monsoon Classic Jacket; my good lady certainly is not, which is always a bonus!
