Pentagon H.C.P Pants
- Last updated: 10/05/2024
Winters seem to be getting colder and wetter, so having the right clothing has never been more important. Pentagon makes a huge range of clothing, backpacks, and other outdoor gear, covering most situations. However, its H.C.P. Pants stand out as something that bit more ‘special’.
Comfortably warm and waterproof
The pants provide protection against temperatures as low as -30°C, which is a lot lower than we are likely to experience in the UK, but reassuring, nonetheless. They achieve this level of insulation by using a laminated construction with Storm Tex, filled with 120gsm of Lithermo padding. This combination delivers waterproofness, windproofness, and warmth. For those who like technical jargon, they are rated 10000mm/24h for waterproofness and MPV 5000 grams/m2/24h for breathability. All seams are taped for extra durability.
Although well insulated, the pants are not too bulky or thick, so comfortable to wear and easy to move around in. The waistband is elasticated and has a cord adjuster so, if protection down to minus 30°C is not enough, the pants will accommodate additional layers.
The five 1” wide belt loops are substantial and cater for belts up to 2” wide. There is a zipper fly and a large button on the front of the waistband. The side hand pockets have a warm tricot fleece lining, and close with zips that are under storm flaps to keep the interiors dry. The cargo pockets are ideal for carrying larger items and are fastened with both press studs and Velcro on the flaps.
Suit yourself
On the inside of the pants, the inner liners have ventilation slots to improve breathability in warmer conditions. On the outside, ventilation slots on the inner thighs can be opened with zips and, at the bottom of each leg, long zips make it easier to adjust the pants around your boots or remove them without taking the boots off. There are also leg cuffs and elasticated drawcords with Velcro fastenings for a tight fit around the boots.
All of the zips are durable YKK products and are waterproof, plus the zips on the pockets have glove-friendly pull-tabs.
When you pull on these pants, they feel well-insulated, but still relatively lightweight. They do not feel restrictive, and you can adjust them to suit yourself. Adjusting them around your boots is quick and easy, ensuring a good draughtproof seal. When you move around the pants do rustle a little, but not so much to alert any game. When wearing them indoors or in a car, you do not overheat, so there is no need to change into them when you go outdoors. If you do feel too warm, then you can open the ventilation zips and they certainly let in a breeze.
Conclusion
Overall, these are excellent cold-weather pants and definitely a good choice for sub-zero conditions. They would also be handy to keep in the car if you are possibly going to get snowed in while driving.
